Dad was in the 6th Fleet on the USS Salem, so Go Navy!

This was the mid-50's? His homeport would have been Villefranche, a small town just outside Monaco on the Riviera. The flagship was there until France bailed out of NATO, then moved to Naples, a considerable step down.
Interesting he has a Springfield '03. I didn't realize the Navy had not gone to the M1 by then but not surprised since the service is usually at least one small-arms weapon generation behind the rest of the services. When I was in we used M14s at least up to the 1990's. But, we did also still had Thompson sub-machine guns in the 70's which were a lot of fun.

1948-1952. Then he went to Penn State on GI Bill after that, where he met Mom

Pick up your rifle???? Did they drop it????

In the USAF they didn't let us have rifles. Or handguns unless you were an MP. We qualified once with the M-16 in Basic Training (for me that was in 1969) then again in the mid-70's when I was in AK and there was some big crisis. Seems IIRC the Army couldn't hold up their end of the bargain somewhere and it got so bad they figured they would give rifles to the AF guys. Musta been REAL desperate!

At qualification, I had about an extra dozen holes on my target and the guy next to me only had about a dozen and the guy on the other side of him had a shit-load of holes. They averaged the three scores and we all passed qualification.

When I served the AF was good at getting us close to the drop zone… One jump they out an entire pass of jumpers into a tree line! They they were, hanging in the pines of North Carolina.
Pick up your rifle (you know all the pogues, desk jockeys, dirty nasty legs, and airman) and follow me. LEGs were what we called the non-airborne, they got to walk everywhere
Range day was always a fun time! I was the unit armorer for a while, once everyone qualified and got back in the trucks to head back to garrison, me and the supply sergeant got to “dispose” of the unexpended ammo. I’ll Never forget the first time these two nco’s were like “now is when the fun starts” these two dudes were like Rambo, Wesley Snipes and any other Hollywood action hero just sending rounds down range… good times.

Game day! 2 pm. Kinda hacked it is at the same time as my Jayhawks will be disposing of the misery tigers.

My daughter is with a retired Army Major. So the home banter is great.
She told me today. Dad, nobody played navy when they were a kid, think about that.

Well I didn’t expect that result. But when they put up the schedule comparisons you realized that if they swapped schedules they’d also swap records.
