BRIDGE HATCH GAS SHOCK

The forwardmost one of ours is missing, along with it's upper mounting bracket. A bud suspects somebody tried to use the strut as a handhold and ripped the bracket out of the underside of the hatch. And of course the PO didn't bother to repair it.

I checked info on the remaining shock, but that didn't lead to an identical replacement bracket...

So I asked Sea Ray where they got their part #1243021, Bracket, 560-DB Hatch Gas Shock (that info from the 2006 Parts Manual). They quickly answered: SouthCoast Marine Products (and they also volunteered that MarineMax would be able to stock the strut itself).

(And note, they're associated with the GHS Lift people, too.)

Abby at SouthCoast was eventually able to say they could fabricate the part for me, $45 and one week lead time. And it arrived a couple days ago.

Nice.

So, unlike a lot of parts that you have to procure through Marine Max, you can actually order the struts directly from the OEM. All of the info is stamped on the strut necessary to order replacements. Mine showed up in under a week from order. On a side note, Chris, I'm surprised your hatch stays open with just one strut, mine would not, and I found out the hard way. Ouch!!!

Doesn’t your hatch have a locking catch that holds it in place when open?

Yes, but to get the old strut off it can't be in the fully extended (locked) or retracted (down) position. I was short my third hand the day I did the swap out....when I removed the pin from the strut the hatch quickly came down and whacked me in the head. That hatch is heavier than you think.

That's what I paid from my Sea Ray dealer a couple of years ago...

@bmac Do you still have the strut info, Brian? I'm wondering if the remaining gas shock on our bridge hatch is OEM or a different brand replacement...

The remaining shock helps during lift and drop, but at least the latch works.

I thought pretty darned cheap, in the grand scheme of "things fabricated on demand."

Ours have no markings on them at all. The cylinder is 13.5 inches. They are stainless steel. I will tell you that the bottom clips were cheap plastic when we got the boat. They broke immediately. I purchased two short black cylinders with metal clips and took them off and replaced the plastic ones. I am not sure of the pounds of lift, but we have solid teak through out the bridge and cockpit which does add quite a bit of weight.

Guys, after much digging, here's the hatch cylinder order. My original cylinders were stamped so it made it a bit easier to find the direct replacement. After I installed the new cylinders the hatch moved up smartly but pulling it down required more effort. If I were to do it again, I might order them with a 60 or 65 pound spring force instead of the 70. YMMV

Thanks very much, Brian!! I'll compare against my remaining shock, but I'm pretty sure I remember "Ameritool" engraved on it. Might be a pleasant surprise to learn mine is original...

OTOH, my most previous PO apparently never met a problem he couldn't ignore... so that could maybe explain original, too.

Note to self: "Deferred maintenance" implies analysis and deliberate decision-making. Not the same as outright "neglect."

Cheers, -Chris

Anyone know of a good MAN mechanic in the Port Canaveral area you would recommend.

Do any of you guys know where your fluxgate (auto pilot) compasses are installed? We are going to upgrade our AP, and I was scoping out stuff yesterday but could not find the compass.

I remember seeing it on one boat we looked at by the aft end of the water tanks, and we have a spot on that bulkhead with 4 screw holes and an empty wire conduit, but no compass.

I have been nearly everywhere on the boat, I don't remember seeing it anywhere.

My next question is, that bulkhead is an awesome place to put one, low and on centerline. Any idea how to run a nmea2000 connection there? I would also run a water line at the same time since we may install a water maker.
I originally planned to try to use the old wire to fish a new cable but that plan is now dean in the water.

The location you identified above is exactly where mine is at. Furthermore, that wire conduit has an orange pull-wire on mine to fish more wires back. The only problem is that I have no idea where the other end of the conduit comes out (aft somewhere)?

That conduit should run aft on the port side and then up to the access panel on the port aft lower side of the bridge and then on into the helm station.

I've had that bridge access panel open to run a new antenna wire - what a rat's nest of wires!! Sea Ray should be ashamed!

Thanks @bmac !! I want to run a few engine room camera wires up to the helm - maybe I can intercept that conduit somewhere in the port side ER where it would run “upstairs” near the aft end of the port fuel tank.
