Does anyone know if there is a lower idle speed setting. When I did the sea trial on Monday putting her into gear was much too aggressive and it had to be constantly shifted into neutral do moderate the speed.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

@jlanka In neutral, push the sync/troll mode. It will put the transmissions in troll mode which is much slower than normal idle.

I usually just run one engine in gear if I need to go 5 kts, simple and easy. Just need to be aware that once you take it out of gear you need to straighten the wheel.

I noticed the MAN powered boat I went for a ride on had a serious kick in the ass when put into gear. About 5.5 knts with one in gear if I remember correctly. Also looked like there were a few buttons in between the throttles which could have been where the troll mode is located.

The MAN R6 800s in our Princess are the same way. First time I drove her was in the ICW around Jupiter, FL. I was at idle but didn’t notice the wake and got yelled at (and called some choice names) by some guys on a float waxing a boat hull. Every time we drive at idle my wife reminds about that. Everyone I have talked to about it says to just go with one engine in gear and keep the wheel hard over to compensate. Which is what I’ve been doing. We have been told the troll function would help, but to make it functional requires a harness that we don’t have though it can be installed. One of the items on our winter punch list is to sort that out. From this post, wondering if maybe that’s not necessary.

I didn't even know I had that feature...I just use one engine in gear. Two at idle are 6.2 - 6.5 kts in my boat

When you’re in gear at idle, you press the sync button to use the sync feature. When you’re idling in neutral, the same button is troll mode. Press that then put engines in gear for slow speed. At least on mine. 2005 - I assumed they all have that feature since we all have the same controls (I think?).

For me, one engine in gear presents steerage issues, particularly when coming in our channel. Always encounter slow pokes in front of me so bumping one gear with steering hard over makes a real challenge.

I look forward to trying it Jeff - thanks.

It’s pretty smooth and slow. You may think “did the gears engage?” because there is no “launch” feeling.

I really didn't think it was hooked up on our boat. I'll try it and report back. I assume it will work with my Yacht Controller as well...

How do you guys like the single lever controls? I'd have them before but they were split of each side of the steering wheel on my 31 Bertram. The other i/o boats had them as well, right side of steering wheel. The boat I am looking at now has the single MAN shifters on the right side of the steering wheel. I would think one you are used to them no big deal but I've always faced stern when docking so this will be a change for me. If this boat purchase is to happen.

For me once I got used to single lever control there was no turning back it's so much easier. It is certainly doable to face backwards when you're docking with them

I like them, but... it takes some getting used to... and ya gotta pay serious attention to "where you are" (in gear positions) all the time. Previously I could dock without looking at the shifters; not there yet, with this MAN system... but geting closer.

FWIW... Steven, at Gulf Coast Diesel, specifically recommended NOT using the trolling mode with the earlier Twin Disc gears (as in the 550/58DBs)... because there's no sensor for gear oil pressure or gear oil temperature like there is with the later ZFs.

Two things about that, though. First, he was talking about long-term serious trolling. Second, our previous boat had trolling valves without gear oil temp and pressure sensors... and worked fine for lots o' hours.

I agree with @ranger58sb about needing to pay attention. I like the single lever, but there isn't much of a "notch" between FNR so it's hard to do by feel unless you're paying close attention. There are soft beeps, but when your also listening to your line handlers/ears and eyes it's easy to miss them.

That said these boats handle great with these big MANs, so no need to rush docking at all, smooth and slow works just fine.

@ranger58sb that’s good to know. I use mine coming in the channel and around the harbor - maybe 10-15 minutes max. One other thing about these controls is they are electronic. There is an awkward pause between putting in gear and when the gear engages - maybe a second or two - but sometimes it feels like minutes. You learn quickly to think ahead a few seconds particularly when docking.

I find it interesting that my Yacht Controller (Actually mine is a “Captain Controller” brand) works instantaneously. I use it exclusively when docking.

I noticed that pause during the ride. I'm sure there time delay is minimal but it sure felt like forever watching the lever go forward till the time the gear was actually engaged.

Throw back about 20 years when I offshore fished....isn't the trolling option for the transmission actually slipping of the gear? I just remember all the big boats talking about getting to 4-4.5knts for white marlin fishing by using trolling valves which really meant the transmissions were slipping.
