Really think anyone is going to install ev charging stations in front of every house? Notice that even the city dont put parking meters. The coins be stolen, what you think think the thugs do with copper shore cords crossing the street at night?

JM I am in no way angry. I asked a long question that in my area nobody has yet to answer. There are parts of the great Us that ev will work, most places, i dont think so. Still looking for an idea.
I think I answered that by saying EVs aren't for everyone?

I do disagree with you on the "most" part. I think they will work in most pleaces.. Those streets in MD, aren't "most" places.

Your point about theft is a really good one.
 
Well someone asked what all of the service stations would become. Sounds like restaurants with ev chargers is a decent plan. Perhaps that’s why subway is buying space in every other
That would be good. You could eat there and not get gas. (;-)
 
BTW, I’m not arguing for a EV Revolution. I think old cars are great, and I think gasoline cars serve a purpose. I don’t think they need to be “taken away”. I do think our government should assist in EV r&d and adoption. Again not to replace, but to supplement gas cars.

We shouldn’t rely so heavily on one source of fuel. Having alternatives is good for everyone and the earth.

again, I’m not supporting that gas cars be taken away from you. I am in support of alternatives to gas cars. There’s a big difference, between those two viewpoints, IMO.
I agree big difference of opinions.
There is no way that the EV targets can be met, hell California dosen't have the power. On top of that no one else does either. Thay keep turning off carbon producing plants we could get down to power certain times of the day and night. 3rd world country BS. Even though I am a old coal guy I do support nuclear power power. Man cannot depend on the sun and wind for power.
 
Energy is energy. It takes X amount of energy to do X amount of work. The only question is where the energy comes from. Now have any of you pansies been to a top fuel hydro event let alone grabbed your furries and been in a really fast boat? 7.4 idling - Pfft.... Hydrocarbons are here to stay for a while; worry not.... Turn the volume up.
 
Energy is energy. It takes X amount of energy to do X amount of work. The only question is where the energy comes from.
One other question is about efficiency. ICE is 30% efficient vs 95% for EV.

I have a number of friends trying to retrofit the Ford E Motor (which is sold out) into some retro cars. The challenge is the lack of Horsepower and finding a battery that doesn’t weigh more than the car. A 390 would need some serious torque. Maybe they will figure it out eventually.
 
The idiocy of all this is that if we are forced to go to electric cars, the infrastructure can't handle it. There is only so much juice to go around. If every house on your street is charging a tesla on a 20 deg. F winter night where is the juice to run your furnace going to come from?

Secondly, if you live in an area supported by a coal fired power plant, your fancy car is providing worse carbon emissions than your neighbor's gas powered car.

Thirdly, my friend (who is a tree-hugger) bought one of those newfangled lectric cars. I was impressed. It was quiet and smooth. Then I learned it weighed 5000 pounds. No wonder.

Unfortunately, on his way home he his a widdle baby deer and the car was totaled....so much for aluminum bodies and plastic seats.

It all will be over soon. When coal is outlawed many industries (and workers) will be gone. We already have 2 horses - plan to buy another one so I can go to the launch ramp and fish off the dock....

You're right -- it's not practical in many ways. Some people like them, and can make it work for their situation.

But these are baby steps towards the end goal:

Live in the pod, eat the bugs, own nothing and be happy!

You are supposed to have solar panels on your house to charge these cars most people charge the car at night when the panels are not working so with is the advantage to this.
We are still burning fuel to charge the car.
I have yet to see a car charging station run off solar panels, You see a big old transformer from the electric company right next to the charging station.

Now that we are all going green what are we doing with all the green waste ( panel, wind turbines, Battery's ) it is all just pilling up as it can not be recycled, So we are not burning fuel but creating another problem.

Alternative energy is still not cost effective for a host of reasons from my perspective; a typical solar system is over 15 years in payback based upon current electrical costs. I would have loved to have a complete off grid solar system on my house with battery storage; the investment was four times the cost of the 30KW diesel generator I ended up for hurricane outages plus there was no realistic return on my investment based upon our Fl electrical costs. So I ended up with an emergency backup system and not an off-grid system. But, no doubt, electrical energy costs are going to skyrocket in the next several years especially in areas that are making bad near term energy decisions like Ca. The odd thing is almost all solar panels (at least the most efficient and lowest cost) and nearly all commercial lithium cells come from China. What really happened to the solar panel production in the US that we spent all of that seed money on? That was a rhetorical question BTW. I do have a portion of my portfolio in US lithium production which I think is really going to do well; in-fact it already is.
I remember lead acid batteries just being hauled to the landfill and dumped. That was an environmental problem. Industry found when lead became a headline health issue and the cost went up that recycling became profitable and industry took an interest without the government getting involved. Then it became competitive and the recycle efficiency really went up. Now they are able to recycle almost 100% of the lead acid batteries and make money at it. I know they are working hard on recycle of the lithium batteries and think it will follow the lead acid story. A big part of that problem is the battery elements for an automobile are thousands of cells essentially the size of a typical 'C' Cell. The labor to get to the recycle elements is cost prohibitive. With all of the great intent and commercial industry wanting to step in the US EPA seems to make any effort toward the good impossible to achieve; this is what needs to be fixed.

Solar panels aren't a requirement... Besides, the way solar panels are setup, they are designed to supplement the grid power during the day, which is the heaviest load time. Charging EVs at night will increase the grid usage during it's lowest use period

The burning fuel at the plant issue has been discussed, but I'll cover it again.

Electric Vehicles operate at 95% efficiency.
Gas Vehicles operate around 30-35% efficiency. (meaning for every gallon of gas they burn, only 30% of it gets used to move the car down the road)
Fuel based power stations operate at 60-65% efficiency. (60*.95) = 57% This is the formula to determine the efficiency of an EV that's running off of gas burned at a power plant. An EV is using more energy from a gallon of fuel than a gas car. Really think about what that 100empg rating means on an EV. That means the car is using the equivalent energy of 1 gallon of gas to go 100 miles. That's far superior to any gas car, and more than overcomes whatever fuel is being used at the power plant.

Many places are powered by nuclear which is extremely clean. Coal accounts for 20% of the US grid and that number is falling every year. That issue will solve itself soon enough.

Batteries are recylced.
Panels are recycled.
Turbine blades (the only part of a wind turbine that can't be recycled) are made of Carbon fiber or fiberglass. Same stuff our boats are made of, yet none of us complain about not being able to recycle our boats when they die. The industry is working on solving this issue, and hopefully they do, because then it will give value to these old shitty sailboats that people like to push off a dock and let the hurricanes dispose of.

I don't worry about money as I did enough of that when I was younger. Now the gas gauge is the "fun meter." I know gas is getting more expensive and people are reportedly using less both because of price and fears it may be some sort of supernatural poison. This only makes its smell more exotic and delicious. On subject though, horses would bolt and throw their riders in the vicinity of early electric lighting poles and T. Edison diagnosed a moisture problem. He said it well: "Electricity and water don't mix!"
