Electric boats should appeal to clean fingernails types

I got no problem with new tech. I wont regress. When they make an ev for $20k, that can go 400 miles and recharge full in 5 mins at any corner station then i am all in. Until then, no, just no. And i ain’t sacrificing for the good of the planet. Fark this rock.

I'll trade charging at my house overnight vs spending 10 minutes at a gas station, potentially getting mugged or having my credit card sniffed any day. I do care about this planet, but not enough to not own a boat that burns more fuel in a weekend then my house uses in 6 months.

I have a Tesla Model 3. As a driving enthusiast it’s my favorite car I have ever own. Instant torque and speed at any point. No turbo lag or gear shifting. I pretty much can blast by any combustion car on the road if I need to. No shifting, no mis shifting. No worry of dropping valves or blowing rings or leaking oil or overheating from failed t-stat. Just hit the pedal and go like a bat out of hell.

I’ve taken it all up and down the East coast. Plenty of chargers and more and more going in. Have never had to wait for a charger. Charging takes 15-20 minutes. Not “a couple of hours”. We pull in, plug in, then go inside and take the potty break and grab a drink and a snack or so. Charging is pretty close to done when we get back to the car.

I don’t know what the answer is to all the fears, uncertainties and doubts of everyone. I just bought the car because it was a new idea that I thought I’d try out. Nothing more than that. I’ve enjoyed it.

I’d bet good money there is NO new car (gas or EV) for $20,000 that will go 400 miles and that you would be caught dead in.

Does the Tesla routing software find unoccupied chargers or does it just lead you to the closest one?

Very valid points! The flipside to that is -- on a "normal" gas-powered car, when you need a new thermostat, or starter motor, or water pump etc ..... you get that part, fix it and you're done. I'm about to buy an electric car and as someone who has been fixing cars since I was a little kid, it's hard to wrap your head around the idea of "you need a new power unit" to the tune of 20 grand instead of one little part.

Those I know with Teslas love them as well but they are relatively new ... and somewhat scarce. Would the recharge scenario work if everyone had one?

If on a trip with a destination programmed, It routes you to the furthest one where you still have plenty of reserve to reach. It actually shows you all it’s recommended charging stops for the entire trip. We’ve gamed it a couple of times and blown past a recommendation stop to go to the next one. But we usually don’t do that. One time the meter read -14 miles left when we arrived but we were still moving. Ha!

my least favorite part of the car is the cabin heater. It’s essentially three 1500 watt blow dryers. That’s a big tax on the same batteries that power the motors. Much less efficient than taking the heat out of the engine in a combustion machine. But we live at the bottom of South Carolina so we don’t use it much.

I'll admit I'm amazed by the latest recarge times.

But until they standardize on battery packs like they do for household batteries ( AA, AAA, C, D etc ) and you can pull into a service station and swap out your spent pack for a full charged one, it's gonna be a while before you have widespread adoption.

If.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here…. But those Combustion engines are making that heat all of the time. That’s why we’re wasting 70% of every gallon of gasoline we burn. An EV consumes the equivalent of 3-4 gallons of gas to go 300 miles. Those numbers are insane, and it’s something the naysayers don’t really think about when they claim power stations still use fossil fuels. True but they are operating much more efficiently.

Yes, if you like tinkering on your cars this won’t be a good fit. Nothing to do. Not sure what I’ll do when it goes completely belly up. Depends on what’s new out there then. Might repower it or might toss it and get the latest new thing.

Don't get me wrong, the idea of an electric boat is not lost on me. Our trips are usually not more than 20 mi round-trip. I've been in contact with Rand boats but I just can't get over their bleak styling (and the cost) right now. But when you consider how much maintenance we do on a twin engine gas or diesel boat .......

At 20 miles an EV conversion is doable in a moderately sized boat. GM makes an electric motor that should directly replace a big block so it shouldn’t be an Impossible swap. You could keep the gas generator to recharge the batts. :)

Don't you have to use your CC to pay and on lock the plug to the charger, And what does it cost to charge the car in 20 minutes.
I know the faster the car charges the more electricity it uses and the more it cost.

Why do i seem the only person on here that has a problem with the government shoveling down my throat what car I should drive? My point is this is fkd up.
Everyone is missing that. You wanna sit at a charging station or haul a shore cord down the street to your car on a February night, go for it. But dont make me do it.

In Maryland, garages are rare. Lots of on street parking. Not conducive to overnight charging at home. I am lucky i have a double wide driveway, only one in whole development. Most park one or two in street. How they gonna charge? Does Tesla provide a 500’ cord? My 25’ shore cord cost $110.
Does your power come to your house from the street? If so, the power company will eventually plant chargers next to the road. It’s just a matter of time before they figure out how they can make money from this and sell even more electricity.

I don’t think our government has picked up this shovel yet…. You can still drive a car from 1950 despite it running on leaded fuel and not meeting current safety or epa requirements.

I just dont get the “come take my gun from my dead hands, dont tread on me, true patriots need spill govt blood” mentality. But hey, force me to drive an ev toy car, hey no problem, come take my car. Wtf.
