Airsep question

I saw that stuff inside once in an airsep somewhere. Reminded me of a loose scotch brite pad like material.

I agree with cleaning the stuff off and letting it ride!!! All that for sound deadening?!

This is right off of the Walker site, a description of the new design:

"Sleek "NO SPRING" design, Integrated built-in silencer, washable air filter, high performance SERVICABLE internal oil mist filter pak"

So the "foam" is just a silencer and oil mist collector. Crazy what they get for all of this and I have four of them (6V92x2) ...

I think the "oil mist" collector, foam, is so that any oil build up doesn't drip out of the filter bottoms and makes it into their drip collector.

I run an iPad I got for $99 as my primary navigation tool….

Sorry, Bill. But I have to post this whenever someone promotes using a tablet as a primary navigation tool. Being in the sunny south, I suspect you've seen this a time or two! :D

Man that's a lot of sheckles!! I saw an article about Tony at SBMAR developing his own. Anyone using them?

Yes i have them on my 6bta's. Work great and got rid of the crankcase vent oil smell in the salon after running.

Ha! Actually that has never happened to me. It’s always stayed on. Might be because I am on a bridge boat and it’s most always shaded by the Bimini.

Full disclosure: That picture was taken when I had my Sundancer. I used the iPad as a backup to the RL0C on my 400DB before adding an Axiom. And no, it never happened to me on the bridge. I just couldn't pass up the chance to poke the bear!

And I hope I didn't derail this thread too much. I'm actually intrigued by this foam issue. I had no idea there was foam in there (so I've obviously no clue what shape mine are in!). i'll put it on the spring To Do list. That's when I'll be cleaning the airseps. Still, I might peer in them when I winterize...

There is no way to clean walker airseps. I tied once and the foam disintegrated even more. Whatever you read about cleaning does not work.

We may be mixing terminology. I'm talking about the removeable air filters.:

I (we) often call them the airseps, even through officially the term airsep refers to the entire assembly (including the filter, silencer, springs, etc.):

You're probably right that the foam inside the silencer is not cleanable. But I was talking about removing and cleaning the filter, not the foam.

Cleaning these filters is the same process as cleaning the air intake filter on my Harley. Actually, the same K&N air filter cleaning/oiling kit can be used for either one!

Saw a recent youtube video of a 6cta on SBAR that they outfitted with the new airsep. I'm really curious now. Why not go with the new setup. Specially if it meets requirements and is about half the cost of the old setup.

I considered it when I started this thread. Seems like it works well, the only thing is that there is a reservoir, which Tony calls the "puke bottle" that needs to be emptied or you will have oil all over your bilge. I'm a big fan of original equipment so I bit the bullet and bought two new complete set ups.

Hello all, revisiting the walker air sep topic, specifically the silencer/metal canister. I spoke to a rep at walker and he told me the canister portion of the set up was good for about 3000 hours. I explained to him how the silencer material in the end of the canister was deteriorating and he suggested just removing it. I took his advise and it's really nothing more than a heavy duty foam pad glued in to the canister. I was able to peel it out and sand papered away any remaining glue. If it's nothing more than a silencer pad, then other than "noise" how bad can it be. So two questions, has anyone else done the same, and can anyone explain to me how to read that little plunger valve with the red disk on the canister. What is its purpose? Thanks!

See under “Filters” here. Means your big filter is restricting air flow. Guess a pressure differential causes the red flag to go up.

Thanks for the gauge answer. Anyone with thoughts about running without that silencer installed on the manifold?

I refurbished mine this past week. The foam silencer looked good, but as soon as I touched it, it rubbed off. Therefore, I removed it as you did. I don’t see how it would be for anything other than sound deadening. The paint on the airseps was starting to flake off as well, so I spent some time removing as needed. I’m not expecting to hear a difference without the foam.
