Marine tool kit

In addition to posts above, I carry a multimeter, clamp on multi meter and a laser temperature gun to diagnose problems.

Also while not typically considered part of hand "tools", I also carry a quality mask, dive light, fins, sharp dive knife and stainless steel chain mail mesh gloves to use underwater if you accidentally get a line or crab pot caught on your shaft or rudder. I have helped many a fellow boater when they have caught one and their single engine boat is immovable.
I also have a portable Hookah air system that I carry on board to allow me to not only check my anchor if needed but to work on the bottom of the boat (replace zincs, clean, clear intakes etc).

Those are some well thought out extra tools. I might have to think about a couple of them. Metal mesh gloves, mask, dive light. I generally rely on being able to see under water without a mask, but obviously it would be nice to see a little clearer. Air system would be very cool, but I probably wouldn't go that far for everyday use. Yes, I just cursed myself... I'd like to keep dive equipment on board just for recreational diving anyway though. I'm certified.

I have a Craftsman kit that is the size of a briefcase. It has metric and SAE sockets/wrenches and star. I also have a tool bag that I carry open/box end wrenches along with pliers and vise grips and screwdrivers.

Similarly I have the Costco tool set and a bag of pliers hammers.

Then I have the electrical bag with circuit testers, multi-tester, and 3 foot alligator clip leads. (I am finding 3 foot leads to be inadequate and plan to make up some 15 foot leads to get from the bilge to the helm if need be.). I have a canvas repair bag with the snap tool and accessories to make canvas repairs. I’m sure someone will be along to tell us we don’t need tools because boats rarely break down like in the first aid thread. LOL

:) I was waiting for that comment. I'm not going to post my tool list because I'm sure someone will tell me I have something I don't need...

Don't even get into the "what spare parts do I need on board" MM would say you should have an extra engine and drive on board cause shit can happen.:D:p
I think most of us have an extra engine and drive onboard. And if I recall correctly, @Stee6043 needed his when he wrapped up some fishing nets south of Sheboygan, and had to limp back to port on one engine. ;)

All great input guys, thanks, I’m gonna get something together over the winter….ugh….winter:/

It really depends on what type of boating one is doing, a looper has greatly different needs compared to a day boater with an 18 foot and outboard. For gods sake the looper doesn’t need a spare tire! LOL

Here's what I used to keep dedicated on the boat. I found the "sets" never had what I needed or they were poor quality. The bag had a lower compartment that the socket set slid into, and the upper compartment opened up holding the other stuff. It continued to evolve over time, but the bare essentials remained the same.

This set then of course grew to hold PEX (fittings, bands and crimper), snaps (assortments and tool), rivets (assortment and tool), and other specialized sets like it. This of course doesn't include the shop vac and cordless drill/ driver that would travel to the boat on "odd job days. "

Holy crap! Now that’s a tool set lol

I usually carry a full set of open end wrenches, electrical repair tools, (wire cutters, needle nose, VOM, tape, tie wraps). All basic hand tools, etc., I also carry a puller for the impeller (and a spare impeller)... you never know when it will crap out.

I just bought a full tool set from Home Depot on sale for $99. It's huge and has everything you could imagine for repairs.

I like this one, gonna pick it up this winter, that’s a lot of tools for $100

Hard to beat some of those long lists. But here are a few things that I have found useful:
  • Wire stripper/crimper - a decent one
  • Tupperware container of a bunch of different sizes and types of wire connections.
  • A box of spools of assorted sizes and colours of tinned wire
  • Assorted shrink wrap tubes, some adhesive lined for underwater things like bilge pump wiring.
  • A rivet tool and a box of assorted sizes of rivets
  • A cordless drill and assorted drill bits and screwdriver bits.
  • A Tupperware bin of stainless screws, bolts, nuts, fasteners, and washers of various sizes. If I need 4 screws, I always buy double. One gets dropped in a place hard to get to, or overboard for Neptune, and the rest go in the bin for the future. That way I always have extras of the ones I used on the boat. After 25 years of boating, its great collection.
  • I have a complete socket set and box wrench set too along with vice grip, pliers etc.
  • I have a massive pair of channel lock pliers that come in handy at times.
  • Assorted sandpaper types and grit levels and a few small files.
  • A small hacksaw with a few spare good quality metal blades.
  • Small spool of monel wire

Good list also. I think a lot of you guys have nice size boats and boat on big water or rivers, I, unfortunately, am on an inland lake of good size, just need the main staples to a small toolkit, if my Weekender breaks down on the water, I can always telescope an oar and paddle back, lol. Always other boaters out too, unless we’re out on the lake after dark. One of these days I’d like to haul the boat over to the west side or the east side of Michigan, or maybe down to the Lake Erie area for a weekend.

And I do have sandpaper onboard Creek, for the sole purpose of scraping the piezo lighter on my Magma grill every now and then when it stops working lol.

I tried just having a small bag for the odd repairs, that grew to a Kobalt hard brief case style 100+ kit plus a full metric tool bag, another odds and ends tool bag and an electrical bag. I hate working out of tool bags but they are the only way to go due to storage space. On the 506 I actually have the room in the engine room to store a stacking tool box system such as Dewalt or Milwaukee has so that just may be my Christmas gift to myself. only problem is the journey into the engine room, past the generator and around the water maker for access. I will probably keep a small bag with screw drivers, pliers, cresent wrench ect readily available for the quick odd repair in a locker on the aft deck.

Put my own together. Standard tools. Built up over the years by if I needed a tool to do a repair, then it stayed in the kit or I got another and added it. Have 2 tool kits, one mechanical and one electrical. Misc spare parts and other stuff. If you put it all together, it would fit in a bushel basket. I have props, but only take them when going on long trips.
