Twin Mercruiser 6.2 MPI Horizon FWC inboards
I'm idly looking at preventively swapping out the heat exchangers on my two Merc MX MPI Horizon 6.2 inboards. Mercruiser OEM part is $2,100 each; I came across www.mrcool.us which offers a drop-in replacement for $850. Normally I'm OEM all the way, but that is a staggering price difference. Has anyone used any of Mr Cool's products? I'm a little skeptical. A lot. A heat exchanger looks like a tricky thing to make.

I've used them twice for marine heat exchangers. Awesome product, great quality, extremely helpful on the phone, Made in the USA. I would recommend them without a doubt.

Be sure you are comparing a full to a full exchanger.

hughespat57 yeah it's the same thing, part number equivalent.

So sounds like a good find. Thanks all.

Yep thanks. Worth a call. They don't appear to have the pattern for my engine (just old 4 cyl Mercs) but looks like the kind of business that maybe doesn't keep its website up to date. They're close at least.

If I were doing PM on my exchangers I’d take them out and have a look at them before bringing them to a radiator shop for a boil and tune up.

I’d spend the thousand I just saved on something else.

For the boat of course.

Or Sen-dure in Ft Lauderdale. They make a lot of OEM stuff, but will sell to the public. There cost was about half OEM and my experience has been great.

Lenco is my go-to....great place that makes a OEM equivalent products at the best price. They custom made me a cooler with a better placement of the fill neck at a fantastic price.
IMHO cooolers are a 10yr throw away item in a gas salt water engine

I also second Sen Dure. I PM replaced my transmission coolers and I thought very reasonable. They had to custom build mine as they only have the cast ends in stock, but it was a drop in replacement.

I have got all new heat exchanger from them. Make sure you get the correct thread size on the oil and transmission coolers. I assumed the thread size was going to be OEM it was one size bigger. I sleeved the connection. It worked well
Good products, quick shipping. I will use them again. Keep one of each removed exchanger as a spare. Cut the old ones in two and look for damage. It will give you an idea of when to replace them next.

I purchased from Mr Cool .................. ordered on a Thursday and it was sitting on my doorstep Friday. The savings were phenominal

Rumor has it, Mr. Cool makes merc exchangers. When I had 2001 8.1s I replaced with Mr cool, oil, trany and heat exhangers. Saved 50%. Exact match and 5 years never an issue in saltwater. Sold boat last year. Rock solid.

I put a Mr Cool in my starboard engine after I noticed a leak in the old one. The price was great and it came very quickly.

The shape is slightly different - the pressure cap is raised up higher than on the OEM part and I had to cut back some clearance from the underside of the deck hatch.

Had a lenco made for the generator identical to OEM applied some Cummins white and You’d never know.

Went to replace my water pressure sensor after a starboard guardian alarm (water pressure did not rise with RPMs) and the sensor just fell off. Replaced the oil cooler from mrcool.us, and easy install. Old heat exchanger had blockage, so I’m doing the port now. Ordered the part on Tuesday, will be here today. Now I probably need to do the main heat exchangers.

I wish these companies could make the aftercooler cores for Cat engines. I know Cat does not make them, but can not find anybody that does. Caterpillar wants about $4000 for a 6 year throw away item on the 3196's

I put a "Mr. Cool" heat exchanger on my starboard 8.1 Mercruiser 7 years ago. Easy replacement and still going strong. Paid about $400 back then. I see they are well over $800 now. Of course copper has almost doubled since then...
