21 foot waves Lake Michigan near Indiana

I pulled up that feed...its Rockin!!!

She seems to be behind a rock jetty and some kind of beach, so all considered, she's just getting some wind and looks to be doing very well. I hope some good fenders on the port side!!

Correct, just wind. But it's brutal. I'm a few miles from there and pretty exposed to wind. Hearing a lot of broken dock lines, damaged power cords and banging against the dock.

Thankfully I'm looking good so far.

Glad too hear you doing g well.

When we fist bought the boat, we were in Clearwater FL. We rode out a couple of tropical storms with similar winds, and it was amazing how fast the lines would wear in you didn't have chafe protection were they rubbed against another line, or the boat. It doesnt take long to saw through even 5/8 double braid!

Amen to that. People think I'm crazy when they see two 5/8s on all corners.... but this is why! I even put paint protection film where the spring line likes to rub on the boat.

21' wave is what supposedly sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald. The ship that was travelling with her is across Sturgeon Bay from my marina right now.

Or she grounded on a shoal and broke her back :)

It's fascinating to read some of the theories on what happened to the Fitzgerald. Almost equally interesting is the controversy regarding the one or two dives that have happened on the wreck post-sinking.

I thought photographs from one of the dives showed that her cargo hatches were not properly employed.

There are many theories. We'll never know. The shoaling theory was born of the communication regarding broken railings on deck which, if I recall correctly, can be indicative of shoaling (significant structural damage). But there's also the hatches, rouge waves, etc and so on. That boat was also stretched at least once in her history. I think there's one theory (at least) that she simply fell apart at the seam...(I mean, not literally at the seam :)).

I think the wind is confused. Can't recall when I've seen north gales switch to south gales so quickly...

Cant wait to get to marina tonight to check on boat. I'm in Portage Indiana but there a fair bit of fetch between Lake Mich and the Marina, maybe a 1/2 mile so over land, we have have pretty good protection from north winds. I'm not too worried but wont relax until I lay eyes on her.

Tonight south end Lake Michigan

Great video, thanks! She's calmed down some since last night.

I spent 5 years down the ditch with my 33'. After having my 37' in MC a few seasons, I'm convinced you can use fishing line to tie up in the ditch and you'll be ok LOL. I typically transient there a night or two around my haul out time and just use my travel set of 3/8"s.

I don’t think the 21 footers ever developed. I saw 12ish on the buoy data. Anybody see or hear of bigger?

Went on a cruise in 2012 from Tampa to Cayman then to Cozumel. We were on one of the smaller Carnival ships. Think it was about 850' (think it was the Paradise). There was a hurricane coming through (think it was Ernesto) so we hugged the coast of Cuba to try to avoid it but we still got hit pretty good. Anyway our room was maybe 20' above the water. We had sealed portals in our room. The waves were above our windows. Not actually hitting the windows but when you looked out you couldn't see past the top of the wave. They roped off the top deck but me and my son went up there anyway. Water was splashing out of the pool and hot tub. I heard that about 1/2 the crew was sick and they had small bags lined up along the hallways for those that got sick. They reported that there were 20' waves

Watching the Ryder Cup this morning. Lake Michigan looks to be fairly calm. However, when you get a closer look at it, the swell seems pretty big. What does it look like to you freshwater guys up North?

The ship is very popular apparently among even those that don't pay much attention to the lakers. The day it came through the Soo when we were there in June, I think every tourist in town and from miles around was crammed into the viewing stands. Much more so than the other ships. We couldn't get in so we just went back to the boat and took pictures from the marina.

It actually was better because even though it was a little further away, we got to see them resupply it after coming out of the lock.

I love seeing the lake fleet, we don't get many anymore in buffalo.

I didn't realize how much so, until it came into Grand Haven. My 8 year old has been a big Edmond Fitzgerald buff, since we went to the shipwreck museum in the UP. He recognized the Anderson as soon as he saw it coming down the channel...we were staying at the Municipal and were able to see it up close and personal...

In high school in Cleveland suburbs. The best summer jobs were on the lake freighters, lot of kids applied, crazy money for a teen, after a summer season they were buying new muscle cars, cash. Applied, turn down, said I was too small to haul chains across the decks. 5’6”.
