480 DB Owners Club

Matt, there is an access panel (it's actually another panel behind the upholstered panel) behind the couch. That is where the forward engine room bilge pumps dump into the common drain. It's been a few years since I've had it opened up but I would guess that is where the mid unit dumps also.
So I might have to pull the couch to do a acid circulation. Ugh, that is horrible.

My wife and I are searching for the ideal 480DB (Sedan Bridge). I am wondering if there is sort of a list of things that are common to the boat to look out for before we spend the $$ on a survey. Kind of like a punch list of known, common problems that we should make sure we do not miss when initially viewing a prospective boat. All boats have their quirks, but I have not found anyone who has compiled a list of what to look out for on the first visit. If it exists, I would be thrilled to see it. If not, maybe some owners on here will share their "things to look out for" and I will compile the list, post it and get owners buy-in on the validity or agreement of the items on the list.

We have been having a tough time finding the right boat that meets our needs... we are a day late, it is too far away or the price is not justified. We sold our 380DA in early spring which is prime boating time for our area, and it sold in 4 hours (scuttlebutt on the dock found our buyer). We did not think it would take us 6 months or more to get our next boat ☹.

So, any help in making sure we are looking at the right things before we hire a surveyor would be welcomed. And if you know of anyone wanting to move out of a 480DB, we would love to meet them.

Thanks C S R, any input is valued and appreciated!

Which years and engine package are you leaning towards?

Hoping someone has done this before and might know the correct part number.... I am looking at replacing the 4 trucks in the salon doorwall. I have looked in the owner's manual but I am not sure which part number I need to look for on-line in order to get 4 new ones.

This has been discussed lately on the 52DB thread and here also I believe. The TaylorMade part # is 5101120 and they get a ridiculous price for them. A few of us have bought these from ebay for $20 each but I have yet to install mine.

We are looking at all 480DB's from 2000 on up to 2004-ish. We heard a few people say how well their MAN's ran and the ease of maintaining them so our focus has been narrowed a little, albeit a little expensive. I welcome any personal experience with choosing the diesel powerplant of their 480DB,
Thank you for your help & enjoy the rest of your boating season.

The Cats, Cummings, and Manns run well. It's the cost of 500 hour or 1000 hour that will get you.

I hear that the 1000 hour service is in the ballpark of 10k. Not sure if this is accurate or not, but something we need to factor in when are selecting our ideal boat to begin negotiations on.

So sorry for my delayed reply.

We are looking at 2000 to 2004 boats and prefer a premium engine package. The boat we are looking at now has the MAN's options. I dont truly know how this influences the overall price of the boat by having these engines, but I hear they are decent engines.

Thank you for answering my request for info, I appreciate your time and knowledge.

Vince, my 480 has Cummins, but a friend of mine has a 58 with the 900 MAN engines. All parts are more expensive and the 1000 hr check is about 10K per engine. Get an actual MAN man to do your survey. They are good engines and MAN is very proud of their product. But I have seen a few of these in the shop near my office the I tend to haunt now and then. Hopefully you will have a MAN certified mechanic near where you plan on keeping your boat.

I will tell you a story about another 58 with the 900 MAN engines the the owner had purchased new. He tended to baby the motors (Which is absolutely the worst thing you can do.). He spent a lot of time at "cocktail speed", thinking he was doing the right thing. One day, he decided to run it up and enjoy some glassy water and the cool breeze. The issue was carbon build up in the combustion chamber to the extent of bending a connecting rod. It was a very expensive lesson. And this issue has nothing to do with the manufacturer. Diesel engines NEED to be run. You will get differing opinions on duty cycle, and I'll let others chime in on their opinions.

I tend to run my engines around 80% most of the time I'm out of the no wake zone.

My point of the above story is to key you in to the fact that if someone tells you they have babied the engines, that isn't necessarily a good thing. If it has the maintenance records that IS a good thing. I you run 'em and do the maintenance, any of these engines will most likely outlive the hull!

100% this!

Buddy has a 58 with twin MAN 900s, they haul @ss, BUT he has to fly his MAN man in from Virginia to do anything to these.

Edit:
corrected... 1 N in MAN

Thank you for taking the time out to share your experience and information on the MAN engine's.. Lots of good information for me to take and factor in the overall equation during our search.

I put my faith in actual hands on experience rather than slick, colorful ads from from a seller or manufacturer. I love this website and it's members. Thanks again for your time and experience. .

I am looking to upgrade from my 320 Sundancer to either a 48 or 520 Sedan Bridge. Any comparisons would be much appreciated. There are things I like about the 520 but not sure the the difference in price is worth it.
Thanks for any thought you may have.

Does anybody have the Taylor Made part numbers for the side window gasket and front window trim gasket? I thought I read how much of each I need and part numbers but cannot find the post.

Is is that a common issue requiring new seals in that area? My wife and I are shopping for A480DB and I am trying to pick up as much info as possible. Thanks for any help you can offer.. Good luck with your search.

It is a common issue with all Taylor made window trim. Not specific to SR. They tend to shrink over the years. You just peal them out and replace. Super easy to do....just annoying

Update. I figured out the issue with the mid AC unit. One of the triggers died. A replacement was easily found and I have it up and running inside of an hour. Not bad for boat work.

Thanks for the valuable information, much appreciated. Does leaking take place 1st or or can you notice it from the outside and catch it before the leaking takes place? It would be terrible to have a leak in the cabin.
