Engine pull for fuel pump replacement -- what other PM should I consider?

One of my fuel pumps is easy to get at the other you need to be thin, young, can bent in ways almost impossible and be able to see and feel in the dark. Fuel pump is located under the manifold, the distance between the manifold and gas tank is 8". I can see why a mechanic would not want to change it. Once out the push rod in the engine that drives the fuel pump will slide out of place. If you decide to replace the mechanical pump pack the area with axle grease to hold the push rod in place.
