420 DA Thread

I had a brand new cockpit cover made for my boat in April. It has two vents sewn into it. It keeps the cockpit just as clean as you leave it when covered and never a hint of moisture/mildew. I am also in a covered slip and it keeps the upholstery looking new. I take if off in the fall when the temps cool and reinstall the camper canvas and then reverse the process after the pollen in the spring.

What makes the camper canvas better for pollen? I’m just trying to decide which one would be better to use from fall to spring. I know it’s not really that big of a deal…

I just prefer to rinse/wash the camper canvas during pollen season. The cockpit cover can be rinsed off but it is just messier to deal with. We live in the pollen capital of the world……by the end of pollen season, the weather has warmed enough that the camper top is not necessary…..

Has anyone replaced their Nav lights? The OEM is Atwood Series 3800 which is now discontinued. I want to replace with the same footprint because the holes are already drilled and the deck is configured for that fixture. Any thoughts, recommendations? Thanks

I personally installed these on a friends '06 44DA, and was only able to use the forward/front factory hole location. I filled the other back two with 3M 4200, and drilled one new hole for securing the back as there was really no need for the other one. Also, put a nice bead of 4200 under/around the new light base before installing and cleaned up the excess with acetone.

I choose this model as it's SS, not white plastic and the other key feature is the LED indicator light on top of the fixture which I can see from the helm.

The little air pump behind the TV in the pic that Blueone shared is very sensitive to needing lubricant. Remove the air hose and a drop or two of multipurpose light weight oil every 4-5 months is needed. I have just replaced my air pump and still no noise except for a whine from the horn area. Turn your boat bow toward the dock and you can stand on the dock and bend down inside the starboard anchor locker and gain access to the horns...remove the air hose, push the button, and if you get air, remove the horns and clean the diaphragms.....I have this to do as well.

Air horns are the next project for me now that vacuflush is solved. When I push the helm "horn" button I hear the pump engage but no horn sound. I will be investigating for air flow thru the tubing and making sure a connection did not come loose on the air compressor or the horns themselves. After that the horns will be disassembled and cleaned. I'll post my findings...

I had the same issue. I had only a buzz at the little compressor. Changed it out and now have a louder noise at the horns, but no horn sound. I am planning to pull the hoses at the horns to make sure I have air there. Then pull the horns and clean the diaphragms. Pull the boat bow forward and can stand on the dock to access them through the hatch….

I've been reading up on the air horn system and I'm about to pull the TV to access the compressor (which I've eyeballed from the access panel in the closet behind the TV) My question is, does the system have an accumulator tank somewhere on the 44DA or is that tank (which I read about) only found on larger boats with bigger horns? If it is on the 44DA, where is it located?

If you have the small compressor behind the TV, you do not have a tank. The air hose from the "beer can" sized compressor runs straight to your horns in the anchor locker. On our 44DB, we had a much larger horn set up with a much larger compressor and tank. On the DB, the compressor and tank were mounted in the ER/bilge inside the starboard side of the swim platform.....

Goofing around in the bilge this weekend….fixed the damn freshwater pump …again. Pulled the grid heater harness. Then decided to clean the bilge and do some touch up paint on the engines. I thought I had Cummins paint but it was the canvas white stuff from Home Depot…. Tried a couple of spots and it is basically an exact match…was very happy with it. Simple green for the bilge did a nice job but was pretty clean to begin with. Disclaimer any over spray you see it was from previous owner :)

Thanks….. no just simple green and a stiff brush and a rag to get in tight spots….. but I have kept it clean for a few years now… and it’s a dry bilge

Seaboard Marine told me yesterday that Rustoleum 2X Painters Touch Gloss White is the closest match to Cummins white....
I am sure that’s possible. I have always used Cummins marine white until last weekend and you can’t tell the difference….. and I am picky…nothing wrong with two choices.

Air horn project successfully finished. Started by removing TV for access to the compressor which worked each time the horn toggle was pressed. Next I blew through the tube myself after removing from compressor….lots of resistance and no sound. Then went into starboard anchor locker and established air flowing up to horns. I then removed horns, disassembled and found tons of caked crud and salt (pictures). Cleaned the parts with soap and water using toothbrush. Gently cleaned plastic reed and reassembled. Blew into each horn and the sound was perfect. Hardest part was screwing the horns back into place using my left hand.

I find your touch up paint job amazing. How did you not get any over spray on everything else???

I painter taped alot of it...and used thin cardboard (beer case) to stop over spray like in front of turbo and Air filter...you can be pretty accurate with the rattle can

Have you ever touched up the bilge? Curious what paint to use there. Your bilge color looks similar to mine.

I have not touched up mine. A few years ago I read on here somewhere of it being done using bilge coat….google it there are a few brands and might find the right color
