OK Motor guys, this boater needs help. 350 Mag MPI w/Bravo 3
Aug 2020, blew a motor, got a Jasper replacement, got 10 hours out of it. Crank was f'd up and jasper warrantied. Mechanic complained about labor rate. Second motor last about 15 hours. Cyl #8 detonated and melted the piston. Jasper provided a motor but no labor reimbursement. I'm calling and trying but no luck.
My question.....I had the injectors bench checked and they were perfect. What else do I need to check to make sure this doesn't happen again. I'm having a hard time believing this wasn't a defect. I just don't want to screw something up again. Thanks all!

Have you owned this boat for long? How many hours on the first motor before it blew? What actually went wrong with the first motor? Is it run 75% throttle at cruise or wide open. Have the 2 replacements been broken in properly?

For years jasper had the best deal on the 6.5l GM diesels. And they were chinese junk. Carbon levels were just wrong and there was all kinds of issues from main webs cracking to cylinder walls coming apart. And they had many issues with their gasser blocks as well. A lot of low quality parts going into the block with no real quality control. There was a guy in town that put a little over $20k into a jasper block and all tolerances were spec'd to perfection. He started it up and it ran perfect for about 20 minutes. And that was when things went to hell. Main bearing spun and rings scored the cylinder walls. The metalergy was just wrong with the block. Anything I look at that has had a motor replaced, if it's a jasper, I run fast. Too many good blocks in the wrecking yards that can be rebuilt, than to hope and pray the metal mix is good with a jasper.

I put a Jasper motor in a 2007 Wrangler a few years ago. It lasted about a 3,000 miles. It came back with a terrible misfire and very low idle. The camshaft cracked in half.
Only the front 2 cylinders were firing properly.

Jasper supplied a replacement long block and reimbursed for about 70% of the time/material replacement cost.

Not a good experience.

My previous boat had a jasper in it. I bought it with 4 hours and it has sat mostly for 4 years. I was worried from the get go. I put almost 100 hours on it in 2 years and no issues. The guy that bought it 3 summers ago has put at least that in it, I See him running up and down the lake…. So my experience was good with a jasper motor

I have a Jasper in my boat. I currently have 200 hours on it. So far so good. Runs strong.

Was this a long block? Pretty tough to blame it's internal components on detonation in one cylinder. Does your mechanic suspect it was a damaged piston that had been installed?
Have seen first hand some real crap coming out of China with aftermarket engine components in the past year.

I've used their long block with no issues. Warranty was better than mercruiser and it was less expensive. Had zero issues while I owned it. Still see it on the river after 5 yrs.

If not Jasper, then what? Wrecking yard rebuild is not an option for many of us.
Why not? You buy the motor and have it delivered to a machine shop. Block is no different marine or auto except for the fuel pump provision possibly. If you need a 454, you cannot beat a gen 6 454. It will work for any big block r&r from 1965-2000.

There is a lot of places to get a great long block. And there is a lot of machine shops that do great work. It's just a matter of talking to them first before getting the motor out of a bone yard. And most machine shops or engine builders can tell you where to go to get a great builder. It's all in the research you do when getting your ducks in a row for any project.

Summit or Jegs have these motors, might have to wait a bit and might as well go 502. Forget the junk yard. Pig in a poke

How so if it's being rebuilt? That's all these different rebuilders are doing. When cores are sent back worn out or whatever. Pull them apart, measure, machine if necessary, put it back together good as new or better depending on who's doing the work and what they actually replaced.
