48 DA Owners Club

I had the main unit in the salon replaced about 4 years ago and my guy put in a Panasonic. Has a plastic pan and recharge ports built in. Has worked great since but this season it’s been blowing gritty white dust and has not been performing as well as usual. I’m no AC guy and haven’t had a chance to get it checked out. Not sure if there is any superior product out there but would love to hear about other choices
Panasonic might be the compressor but not the unit. Wonder what he actually used? I am leaning towards the MarinAire units. Going to upsize the master to 9000btu, 16,000 for the salon and 6000 for the mid cabin. Planning this now for a fall project.

Guys and Gals,

Might want to check your check valves in your sump. Was working on the boat yesterday and the foward bilge alarm we off...odd... Looked and I had water flowing into it from the sump box. The breaker had tripped on the sump pump for some odd reason. Vacuumed out the water reset the breaker and tested, working???? but when the pump stopped all the water came rushing back in. Pulled the check valve and...wow that ain't stopping anything anymore. Swapped it out for a spare I had and back in business. Now I am guessing because of all the crap that goes through that one since 2006 it is more "wear prone" that the ones on our sumps but then again our sumps are probably more prone to dry roit. That being said Whale does not offer a replacement "joker valve" you have to replace the whole unit. I found them on Amazon for $16 buck and orderd a couple to check their quality. I am also going to check around for a replacement joker valve to rebuild these Whale units. Keep you posted

Is this the inline one past the pump itself? Good catch by the way!

Looks like the effects of concentrated chlorine or bromine on rubber. Possibly someone in the past put pool tablets or poured chlorine bleach into the sump. I would be skeptical of the rubber shaft seal on the pump and float seals also.

I can only guess what the PO did but being that old it was past it’s life anyway. I already replaced the pump and went to an electronic sump switch (water witch)a few months back. Never even thought to check the check valve since it was working back then.

Just got my inflatable fenders and air gun. Takes less than a minute to inflate each fender. Now I can deflate, roll up and store easily under a seat. These will work perfectly when we travel away from the home port and not take up valuable storage space.

@ocgrant On the Ryobi blower, where did that adapter come from that "screws" into the fender to open the valve? It wasn't with my blower nor the fenders. Do you have a source for it?

Thanks, as always,

Jaybeaux

It should have come one with each of the fenders. Call them and tell them they were missing and they will send you some at no charge.

We’re still on the hunt. Tan Lines wasn’t the right 48 for us. We have recently found 2 more that we are really interested in! Stay tuned!
If you don't mind me asking what happened? I know you were coming down for the survey and had everything going in the right direction....another typical Maimi boat???? Lipstick on a pig?

She was just not well taken care of. I was surprised about the how little sun / salt damage. When I told my husband we could clean her up and fix all the imperfections and get her to a 7, his response was, “since when do you settle for a 7!” He was so right!

Bigger concern was bottom needed to be sandblasted and repainted (vinegar smelling bubbles) & higher than normal levels of iron in oil sample from one of the engine mains. Just too many unknowns.

Florida boats that aren’t from members in this forum are going to be tough to look at! Not all 48 owners are as neurotic as we are. All kidding aside, good job on your diligence, the right one is out there - take your time.

Sounds like the right decisions. Difficult right now to buy boats especially good well maintained ones. Are you bent on a 48 Sundancer or other options on the table?

hello Everyone,

New to the group because I have deposit down on a 2007 48DA and the inspections are coming up soon. I'm pretty excited. Reading your threads have been very helpful throughout the process. I've learned from you all about what to look for in the 48 that may be or may become an issue. I went through the boat and the cabinets look to be in great shape. I know that was a possible issue.

The other thing I saw mentioned here was the transmission coupler and rubber inserts that fail. Does anyone know if this will be easy to check in a survey? Unfortunately, I'm not that handy with engine issues and will need to rely on a pro.

I also saw that the sanitation hoses sometimes go bad - I'm guessing those are easy to check.

Also, Does anyone have or know of a reliable Cummins tech in the New Jersey area that can do an engine survey?

thanks in advance

Bill

We are focused on a 48 for now! Found a freshwater beauty and going to look at it next Thursday! Captain Rusty knows the owner - says he is meticulous. I love that word!!! Praying this one works out. We have someone looking at our 340 the day before we leave.

Bill, welcome to the Club Searay. I wish you well on acquiring a 48DA, it’s a great boat to own.

regarding the transmission couplers, you will want to inspect the area for small rubber particles on the top of the transmission housing and below under the engine. This would be the only sign of coupler failure prior to real mechanical issues.

the sanitation hoses can be inspected in the bilge coming off the vacuflush tanks. You will see cracking on the hoses and most likely they will be due on a 2007. I changed mine out this past spring on an 09.

best
