A ship splits in half and stays afloat?

A lot will depend on insurance and her age.

I saw one picture near dusk after the house had split off from the forward section of the hull. The generator still running as the lights were on!

If a ship is built correctly this is the result. A ship should not sink if it has true water tight compartments throughout the design.

Titanic had this, but the engineers only built the compartments about 3/4's of the way up, and left the top part open, thus allowing each compartment to fill and pull the other compartment down low enough to start filling, then the next, etc.
