Thought I'd try this here before I open a new thread on it. I clean the boat's bottom myself. In salt 24/7 year round boating. Its pretty easy to do as I have a process now for it. Except for the inside of the underwater main exhausts. Barnacles and oysters can get pretty thick in there if you don't stay after it. I need to invent a tool to scrape everything off. I can get my hand/arm all the way up there fine but I need downward leverage to pry stuff off. First try is going to be a screwdriver bent back almost the full 180 degrees. First one I tried broke. So must have been cast. Should I try bending something else (putty knife) or are there bendable metal screwdrivers out there.

By the way, I've tried everything known to man on the metal running gear and nothing really works to stop hard growth. The barnacles and oysters just love the hard surface regardless. Best solution I've found is a once a week jump into the water to wipe it all down to stop growth from starting.

Maybe these would help although not rounded, one of them is a reverse scraper.

Small hook scraper?
You should be able to bend a screw driver, heat it up. I have one I bent to a 90 for removing hoses.

Next time your boat is out of the water, clean and repaint those areas, except mix copper powder with the paint.

Hi all, is there an OEM reclining sunpad for 40 Sb?

Hello guys,
I lost power to my cockpit lights (both the lights under the overhang as well as the lights along the cockpit floor). Is there a fuse somewhere that I don’t know about between the 12v panel and the cockpit light switch?

As an experiment, and fwiw information (we all like to know how each other’s 400’s run) I just ran a short distance at 15 mph.
Rpm’s were 1750 and egt was right at 1000 degrees. Too hot and it may have crept higher but I only ran it there for less than a minute.
2000 rpm produced 18+ mph with egt at 950, still too hot. The boat was on top, but not fully.
Normal fast cruise for me loaded down the way we are now is 2280 rpm, produces 24.5 to 25 mph and 875 degrees on the egt. Bottom is clean, fresh water.
I run 3 different speeds. I run about 2180 slow run. gets me about 21.5MPH shaves a bit off of fuel burn and I'm on top at this point. Usual cruise is about 2250, 24MPH. Fast trip to like a local cove or beach I'll run 2320 puts me to 26.5mph. Now this is usually 2/3rd load(fuel and water) and clean bottom, 2 adults.

one more question for you all. I usually power down the Gen about 7-8 PM. Some nights we get honoree with the music and drinking and have everything on until about midnight. then about 8AM I wake up to the CO alarm tlling me the batteries are low. for such occasion I just installed a battery switch and jump the engine and house batteries for such an occasion. Now last weekend I had no issues and batteries didn't drop below 12V. Now 1. is there something wrong with doing this other than draining all batteries? 2. if only used on accession can this be hurtfull to the batteries? 3. should I just leave the switch on as I never ever drain the batteries to much (BTW all new batteries this year) 4. has anyone else done this?? Just curious. Oh and I do have a NOCO Boost 4250A power pack on board as well in case something does happen to the batteries and I tested it with my old dead batteries and it started up both Cummins no problem..

What’s your prop pitch? I’m at 22.7. My3sons is at 22.5, I believe. I see about the same speeds at those rpms. Although hard to be exact because I’m always into or with a 2mph current.

Good question. They are 24" Pitch. I also have a set of 23" pitch and get the same speeds at about 120RPM more. The original owner felt with the 23" pitch the boat was under-propped. I tried them one season and felt the same way. with the 24's I get to 2650 RPM with 1/2 load and usually run at that load so I put the 24's back on and have been happy. I also felt the 23's while maneuvering a slip or docks I didn't have the diesel thrust I wanted. the 1" made a big difference.

A friend with a 97 400 SD wants to install a Reverso Oil Changing system, I had one on the 44DB and it was mounted on a bulkhead behind the starboard engine. The 400SD doesn't have much in the way of bulkhead space to mount accessories, does any one have a Reverso installed and if so do you mind sharing the location or thoughts on the installation?
Thanks

My generator is located on centerline against the transom. My Reverso is located on the Starboard side of the generator.

Starboard of center in front of the gen battery on ours. Space is a premium in the ER and this seems as though it's as good of a place as any. I don't have any trouble using it in this location. I've been on several other 400DB's and they were the same.

That is a great place to put one. This boat has an auxiliary waste treatment and disposal system installed in that space but since his is a gasser with no Racors I think I will recommend that he install a mounting board similar to the one your Racor filters are mounted on and install the Reverso there.
Thanks for the replies and pics.

I've got the Westerbeke gen in mine and it's a lot wider than the Onan. So my Reverso is tucked even further starboard, on the starboard side of the gen battery (which is starboard of the gen). It's basically right below the fresh water pumps. Sorry, no pic handy.

I think it may say bennett...i may have found the replacement...BTW..40.00...hmm

Hey Mike, are you still around? Or anyone else can chime in.

Coming up the Bay today in an annoying starboard wind and sea I had trouble keeping course. I realized my port side was flying high and it wasn’t the conditions. Used the trim tab switch to drive the port bow down and the switch was mush. Not the nice click feeling of the momentary switch engaging by and letting go. Just pushed it to the stop with no feeling in the switch. The bow did come down (sometimes) but wouldn’t stay down. It kept raising back up when I let go of the momentary switch. Needless to say, an annoying ride home.

My SB trim tab hasn’t worked for a while and I was thinking it was either the motor being dead or the actuator being stuck. Now I’m wondering if the SB side of the switch died first, in a different way. Regardless, before I dive in to bilge to diagnose, I need to replace the helm trim tab switches. I see Mike (and Bill?) had a discussion a long time ago about the replacements. I can search Amazon but was wondering what others have used as replacement trim tab switches?

This is what I’ve found so far:

Thanks!

That’s the replacement I have. It’s a tad larger than the original. You will have to file the opening larger to get it to flush mount. Otherwise it will stick up from flush about 1/8”, like mine.

Thx. Got one on order; should arrive tomorrow. As for installing, I'm no stranger to taking a file, a Dremel or a jigsaw to a helm! I never like doing it, but I do it!

Does anyone need or want my Stainless canvas enclosure structure? I believe its the standard stock one. I attached photo of canvas on it for reference. I tossed the old canvas. I installed the hardtop and do not imagine ever going back. Its huge and I'm not sure how you'd ship it or transport it easily. But I'd like to get it out of my yard if anyone wants it in Northern California for free. I hate to chop it up if someone could use it.

I believe you can direct message me if you're interested.
