420 DA Thread

Is the 2003-2005ish 420DA the same hull/dimensions as the 98/99/00/01 400/410DA?

I can clearly see the 420 is not the same as the 44 SunDancer. Looks like the 04/05/06/07/08 44 Sundancer is a similar size to the 96-99 450 Dancer.

the '03-'05 420 is the '06-up 44da, all they did was cut windows in the sides some of the early 420s did not have hardtops - totally different boats from the early 400/410 and 450DAs

Thanks. Quite the asking price difference between an 04 420 and an 07 44 DA!!

There are a handful of other changes as well, mainly in the galley, all of which add storage.

Most 03 and 04's did not have hardtops, big difference in cost and value in that one option.

Yes, I was told there was a $40K swing in value of like boats one with hardtop vs one without.

The admiral has decided she wants a new fridge in the galley. We have the Coolmatic (Waeco) 115 in there now. It works OK on AC power, but not so well on DC.

We went and looked at the Isotherm Cruise 130 Drink, but she thought the handle on the front made it look cheap. Without scrolling through 176 pages of this thread, can anyone recommend a different unit that will fit? We have the ability to do slight modification (cutting, bezel, etc.) but don’t want to get into a full galley remodel.

Thanks for the help!

Now that I think about it there was an 07 44 and an 05 42 on the same dock this weekend. It seemed to me like the 44 was significantly bigger. I'm sure the extended swim platform help with making the 44 look bigger.

Ya, sizewise they're the same to the inch according to SR boat specs.

They are the exact same hull sans the bigger hull-side windows. It was/is very typical of Sea Ray. They did it to the 390/40 Dancer, 390/40 Motor Yacht, the 420/44 Sedan Bridge, 48/50 DA, etc., this list goes on and on and on.....

I don't recall all the details but nearly all US manufacturers had similar changes in 2006ish. The NMMA (marine marketing) "mandated" that the model lengths be the molded portions of the hull, so for example the 2' of extra swim platform on the 420 made it a 44' molded boat so it changed to the 44. If that platform was bolted on it would have stayed the same.

In a way it does make it easier. The last year and half of us boat shopping my wife would get confused and irritated when I would say that "52" is actually 56' as we looked at foreign built boats, or worse in the case of Marlow's the model length is closer to the waterline length and no where near overall.

Well, it's the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. As of yesterday, we no longer own our beloved 2004 420. However, we are now the proud owners of a 2006 48 Sundancer. We are very much looking forward to the new adventure.

Thanks to all on this thread that have taught me so much over the past 5 years. You know who you are! I am going to miss all of the upgrades that I put into the 420, but I can look forward to new projects on the 48.

This isn't good-bye....I'll still be here!

I have the same issue on my 390DA, the AC condensate trays sit with water in them and whats happens when you go boating the water spills over and drains into the bilge. Poor design on the tray and they get rusty crud build up. Started to check mine weekly now

Jay, do you miss the split windshield? I wanted the 48 but I’m not a fan of fully enclosed windshield. I’ve considered upgrading to the 52 instead for that reason alone…

@NickHadel I have less than 1 hour at the helm of the 48 so the jury is still out. However, I'm tall and on the 420, I often found myself trying to look over the windshield (thru the polycarbonate) or under thru the windshield only. It was never a deal breaker with me, it was just an observation. Also, I am "sunshine challenged" so the full/integrated roof/windshield appeals to me.

The 420/44 is a great boat. It gave us 5 years of enjoyment that we will remember for a lifetime. Good luck with your search!

Congrats! The 48DA is one of my favorite boats SeaRay made.

So, today, not one of the electrical outlets on the boat work. Reset the GFI outlet in the kitchen cuboard over the stove. Everything else is fine it seems. A headscratcher. Suggestions?
