I’m a good swimmer, I usually don’t get in the water (that’s over my head) without at least holding on to a jacket. Too much work to get back to the boat/dock/etc…

It's a great idea to practice MOB drills. Anytime we see a balloon, floaty, e.t.c in the water we do MOB / recovery drills. Never a bad idea to sharpen skills!

There’s got to be more to this.

We went out of Sebastian inlet last week in 4-6ft swells. Got hot out there so I jumped in the ocean to cool off. Bobbed right back up in that salt, current and swells.
You don’t just sink. Must be more to this.
Sad.

Agree, i dont know how cold LI water is now, but i never wear a PFD this time of year. Good swimmer. Our water temp is 76. Maybe the guy had a heart attack and then fell in.

Seems that there are some critical details missing from this story. The broad brush strokes leaves a lot of questions.

I agree there is little detail but the fact remains, the guy can't swim & he's out on a boat & not wearing a PFD. Had he been wearing one, the mystery would've already been solved as he would be floating near the boat whether he suffered a cardiac event or not. My father in-law can't swim & whenever he's on my 330 he wears a PFD. That's not even a question when he comes out with us.

Probably, but the point is there are lots of reasons you can end up in the water.
Knocked out as you go over, health issues, collision...
In even mildly cold water you can experience a "gasp reflex" and start ingesting water.
No life jacket, no chance...

"Hey Noah!"
"Yes Lord?"
"How long can you tread water..."
