How far do you drive to your boat?

My choice of location was because of boating, not working.

I designed the house to store all my boats under cover.

When my company moved to a place with limited boating, I sucked it up until I found another job that allowed a very short travel distance every day to get to work.

Jim, that could be a whole different thread about why we live where we live. I bought the house that I did ONLY because of the good schools for my kids. It's about a half hour to the closest part of the ocean. Since then, I've gotten into boating and started to really wish I live on (or near) the shore.

Or I watch Miami Vice and start to wonder what it would be like to live in a region where there is no "boating season" because you can go on the water all year long.

I like to get away from "home" to go to the boat. Being I work from home...or anywhere...the live where I work or live is a nonsense argument for me. Getting away is the point for me.

Yeah I think you get my dilemma. When my boss told me we were moving and I told him boating was my life, he said but the ocean is only 2 hours drive. Then, I said but its salt water and I can't afford the maintenance. Besides you keep me on the road 6 days a week, so when would I have time? Then, he said but your salary will double and if you chose not to you'll lose half your pension. And I then said, but the school system there sucks the big one and what about my kids. Then he said put them in private school you'll be able to afford it. And I said but the real estate costs double....yada yada.

In the end there was life after the company. My pension was $2K a month less, but we are happy. My kids got the edumacation and they are very successful now in spite of it all. And I'm in my boat 20 minutes after I get up every day.

Life is good...

I drive 30 minutes, used to be 20 minutes to a closer marina but that one was a two hour run to the main river to the Delta or Bay. 10 more freeway miles each way saves $200 each weekend trip to the Bay or Delta.
Carpe Diem

Where are you at on the Delta? I was up at Willow Berm Marina in Isleton last summer almost every weekend in July and August.
Our drive now from Redlands to San Pedro is around 1:20 depending on traffic

1hr 45minutes I work 2nd shift Sunday - Thursday by choice. Get off at 11:00 wife has the car ready make the drive without anyone on the road. Then we don't have to get up early in the morning.

The boat is in Benicia two hour cruise to SF and Three hours from Willow Berm which really is about the only place we like to go in the Delta.

15-20 minutes if I take the highway (The 405) ... 20-25 minutes if I take the scenic route along the Pacific Ocean (Vista Del Mar) ... I usually take the scenic route as it’s more relaxing.

I live in a town on Lake Ontario but drive about 2hrs (115mi) to the cottage/boat on Georgian Bay, Lake Huron. I had a boat on Lake Ontario for about 5 years. I miss the 10 min drive to the boat, but don't miss the Lake. Not my kind of boating. Our cottage is on the beachy part of Georgian Bay, so the boat has to be in a marina about 15 min away, door to helm. I really liked this summer when COVID had me working from the cottage so I had my short trip to the boat again. Silver linings I guess.

We kept a searay downtown Oakville just up the river past the power boat club and we lived in Bronte...that was the closest we ever lived to the boat

For 15 years we drove 2 1/2 hrs to Georgian Bay, then we bought the Sea Ray and went 3 hours to Michigan every weekend, crossing the border. Did that for eight great years and now the boat is only two hours away, so nice and close...
Had the boat remained in the U.S. with the border closed, we never would have been able to use it in 2020, maybe even this year too. We really miss Michigan boating.

8 miles.

The middle half is through a tourist town so depending on the time of day or day of the week it’s either 10 minutes or half an hour.

Fresh Water
1 minute to boat, 25 minutes to water, 20 minutes underway

Salt Water
1 minute to boat, 3.5 hours to water, 20 minutes underway

My boat was in the marina at Bronte harbor. I used it a lot then. Mostly for salmon fishing with me and my two kids. There is really no where to go on that lake that is close. And you probably remember how rough it gets in an east wind and there are few harbors to tuck into to avoid it. My wife never enjoyed it except on the infrequent glassy lake day.

Yes...we went to Toronto island a lot... or shoot across to Wilson

30 minutes from my home to south end of Lake Michigan. Almost all highway which can be good, or bad in the summer, 80/94 thru Northwest Indiana ☹. Close enough where if i feel the need to run to the boat during the workday i can squeeze it in, and close enough so that after work i can make it to boat and down the ditch into the lake to have a good hour plus of anchoring and swimming before dark for most of the summer. I commend those that drive much longer than that and envy those that are closer.
