Celebrating America? Gag me with a spoon please!

Sadly not the case for a long while. According to a recent survey by U.S. News and the Wharton School of Business the top three greatest countries are #1 Switzerland, #2 Canada and #3 Japan. The U.S. came in at #7. It is no coincidence that the best countries to live in are also among the safest. The U.S. ranks #13 amongst the most dangerous countries, alongside the Phillipines and Myanmar, because of political climate and gun violence. As for education and health care, #26 and #27, in spite of the U.S. spending more on health than any other developed country.

Yes, it's super dangerous here. You should stay there. Actually, do us a favor and phone the migrant caravan and tell them how violent, racist and bad our country is. I'm sure they'll turn around.

It may have been an illusion but American was once more cohesive. You didn't have the divisiveness and angry polarization. Now you have Repubicans hating and blaming Democrats and vice-versa. You have Proud Boys and Oath Keepers against the BLM movement, evangelical, right-wing extremists against liberal progressives, the entitled rich against those struggling to survive, the ignorant denying the ravages of Covid while 400,000 have died of it, those fighting for democracy against those that propose a Trump monarchy, the poorly educated creating conspiracy theories while science creates vaccines to save them, Antifa (if their is such a thing) against the Qanon wackos, and it goes on... That is a fractured country by any measure.

I wish you would stop watching CNN and reading rags like US News. Do your own critical thinking. Both the media and the politicians need the division narrative so they perpetuate it. As of December, only 15% approved of Congress and 82% disapproved. And 60% don't trust the media. So we are "unified" on those issues.

The problem we have right now is a political class that despises their constituents -- and that is both parties. They have become entrenched at all levels of government. It's extremely hard and very messy to unseat them. But it is happening, slowly but surely.

As for your "Top 3 greatest countries" all we should hear from them is "thank you." It's not even worth discussing.

"The Grant report concluded that the US, which was ranked 10th, has "solid" business growth fundamentals. However, Congress's inability to deal with fundamental questions of future tax and spending policy is seen as stifling the country's economic growth potential. 'In the United States, growth and job creation remain slow whilst the return of polarising partisan politics is preventing any meaningful discussion of how to tackle the growing mountain of government debt,' the report observes." The U.S. performed better by most metrics over 30 years ago. There's a lot of work to get that performance back and denial doesn't get the job done.
Sir you are a fool in my opinion. I think you are reading to much fake news.

As I noted earlier, denial will not fix it. This "fake news" is just the facts that you don't want to face up to.

I assume all those folks that went to Canada over DT are now packing to come back. Maybe the ratings you use will change.

Soooo...when’s your flight to Switzerland? Good riddance.

Nope. I have 2 friends and their families that moved from Texas a year ago and they love it here. Five minutes to the ocean, 35 minutes west to the ski hill and half an hour north to wilderness camping and a dozen lakes. And of course there's the health care and excellent schools for their kids. They say that they will never move back and have absolutely no reason to.

I will let the caravan from central America know how good it is there, they'll love the health care but will more than likely decline the contribution.

Whatever happened to "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,..." engraved in bronze on the base of the Statue of Liberty? America, like Canada, is a nation of immigrants. Immigrants built America. You or your ancestors were welcomed but now you are fearful and want to close the door.

I just had a great idea for the 28th amendment. It will called the "Do-over option".
If they don't like the outcome, a party would be free to call a "do-over" of a presidential election and have a complete re-vote, and there would be increased scrutiny, even more than normal. But if they lose again in the do-over, the winner gets an extra 2 year term extension.

Now that is pretty silly. But I wonder what the GOP would decide, if it was there today?
I have a better idea for a 28th amendment. Canadians must stfu about American politics until their nation does something consequential in world history.

I'm grateful that you are not in your country's diplomatic service.
In 2005, President G.W. Bush gave an address, in part noting:
"Three years ago, Halifax and other towns and villages from Newfoundland to Manitoba to the Northwest Territories to British Columbia welcomed, as the Prime Minister mentioned, more than 33,000 passengers on diverted flights. For days after September the 11th, Canadians came to the aid of men and women and children who were worried and confused and had nowhere to sleep. You opened your homes and your churches to strangers. You brought food, you set up clinics, you arranged for calls to their loved ones, and you asked for nothing in return.

One American declared, ”My heart is overwhelmed at the outpouring of Canadian compassion. How does a person say ”Thank You, to a nation?” Well, that’s something a President can do. And so let me say directly to the Canadian people, and to all of you here today, who welcomed Americans, thank you for your kindness to America in an hour of need."

President Bush also had noted:
"Both Canada and the United States have accepted important global duties, and we will meet those responsibilities, for our own benefit and for the good of mankind.

Canada’s leadership is helping to build a better world. Over the past decade, Canadian troops have helped bring stability to Bosnia and Kosovo. Canada’s willingness to send peace- keepers to Haiti saved thousands of lives and helped save Haiti’s constitutional government. Canadian troops are serving bravely with us in Afghanistan. Other Canadians stand on guard for peace in the Middle East, in Cyprus, Sudan and the Congo."

I do not think anyone likes the government they have after six months. None do what they said they would and ones life does not improve. With 1/3 of most countries having a population below the poverty line and 1/3 is struggling to feed, shelter and provide a purpose for their life. Is there a solution? I have no idea. But senior citizens need to retire and go to some place warm, not have to wear free mittens and heavy coats.

Its a free world. Look it up. Your version is called the 1st amendment.

Oh, and another thing. This Canadian is not bad-mouthing America at all. I love the US and what it stands for. I will however call out anyone that has simplistic, one-sided arguments and nut bar conspiracy theorists. I do believe the US is one of the best democracies in the world, and it is the free-est country in the world (not as free as you guys think it is, and not enormously more free, but more). I will call out those that spout how great the constitution is and then in the next breath say the whole system is corrupt and in some way led by a cabal of super-genius democrats that are so brilliant in their strategy to take over all that is good in America. What this whole thread and many others is about, in my view, is a bunch of bitter Republicans blaming the winner for why the loser lost.

Let me put it this way, if your kid came back from a swim meet where she came in second and she was complaining about the kid that won, instead of focusing on what she should do to win the next time, what would you say to that kid? Would you tell her to pull a Tonia Harding like some in the GOP tried to do?.

When my grandparents came to this country in the late 20s they registered at Ellis Island ,legally and went through the naturalization process not speaking the English language they learned to assimilate to this new land to become an American to have that identity as time passed .My grandmother told my grandfather she didn’t want him speaking Italian ,that we have to adopt this new language in this new land . this is a melting pot ,there was an idea of what this country was ,proud to be part of it. most of that idea has been lost due to not upholding the immigration policies and shitty politicians .Like I had said earlier people wanted to come here for a chance at a new life that they were in control of , opportunities that they wouldn’t have in other countries. We are one of the only countries in the world where you could stream across the border get assistance never have to work never have to go through immigration . If your countries policies were the same you would be in the exact “boat” we are. Canada‘s immigration policies require a certain level of English,Or French to become a citizen. We used to have that too, now I have to press “one” for English when making a phone call .....we have lost our identity to politicians and bureaucrats. We are not united anymore I’ll agree with that, but unity comes from the top down and our government fell short. I truly believe it’s mostly from the “left “ but the “rights” hands are dirty as well. President Trump came into this office I believe with old-school ideology and try to vet all the people that did not come into the country the right way and he was chastised for that from the beginning. I would’ve done the same procedure ,stand up and be counted , assimilate to this new country and follow the rules and stop looking for something for nothing. The left is nothing but drug dealers Handing out crack to whoever enters this country and getting them hooked on the system, Built in votes for life...

Is anyone else noticing that gas prices at the pump are steadily rising since the great Biden chopped the Keystone pipeline?
Yup was paying 179 in the beginning of December now gas prices are 250
And of course when they switch to the summer blend it jumps another $.50 so as gas prices stand at this moment it will be no less than three dollars by memorial day weekend if nothing else changes which I’m sure it well so I am guesstimating at least four dollars a gallon by May.

Joey, your post got messed up but I am separating it for comment.

I agree on everything you say above. (except that you blame the left for lack of unity. I blame BOTH).

Canada has its own immigration issues, like all places. We are lucky to not have a wall needed with the US. That is because we are both democratic, freedome loving, fundamentally principled and good nations with a long history of liking eachother.

The US absolutely has to control immigration because it has other issues. It IS the land of opportunity, and there are proportionally more in the world that want a piece of that opportunity (in a good way). And there is a lot of desperation out there with really good people that love their families and will risk death to get them out of whatever shit hole they are in. And you can't take them all in. You need a process and you have a process. And it probably needs to be improved.

But, you must admit, that there is a very significant portion of the far right that want immigration stopped. And virtually every racist not only wants it stopped, they want it reversed. And neither is what America stands for. Unfortunately, Trumps political ambitions and tactic was to re-ignite the far right and the anti-immigration types that did not trust government, to trust in him. He was "cute" by his anti-immigrant rhetoric by putting his words right up against the line so he could "wink wink" to the extremists, while saying to the normal right that "that is not what I meant". It was all political tactics IMO. He probably doesn't actually have the far right views that the Dems think he does (remember he used to be a Democrat - and he wasn't stupid then either). But he absolutely wanted the far right to think he does. He woke up a right extremist mob and couldn't stuff the genie back in the bottle and didn't try.

You need to read up on the subject. We have allowed the most legal immigrants each year for decades. We have more foreign born people in our country than any other country. It's the flood of illegal immigrants that we want to stop.

Trump wanted a points/merit system for immigration similar to Canada...for that he and his supporters are called racist.

The losers don't like the government they have right away! They don't wait 6 months. And the one thing I will give Trump, is he did exactly what he said he would do. And he was fairly elected to do just that. And half of America went TDS then, and half of America now has DDS.

The one thing I find very interesting about people in the US and Canada is that in both countries the conservative view is that you should give people (and business) hand ups, not hand outs. And in both countries (but far more in the US) there is a conservative view that those that get hand-outs are lazy MFs. And in both countries, who gets hand-outs is not limited to conservatives or liberals. They all get it if it is there.

So I would hope that the far right low income Republicans are principled enough that they don't apply for, or accept, the Federal hand-outs they despise so much. That includes accepting the new minimum wage that the Dems are planning on trying to put in place.

Now you are blaming global oil prices on Biden's decision on a pipeline that is not even built? That is hilarious. Did you also notice that as soon as he is in power, temperatures in the north east have plummeted?
