Marina Renting Your Slip to Transients

Left Cleveland in ‘86 after growing up there. No regrets. Bought boat soon as I got MD. Never looked back, live 8 miles from my boat and cheapest slips in USA. Lovin life! If you young enough do it. Lookin at corn fields gets old.

yacht club I belong to asks that if you are going to be gone for more than three days to notify the fleet captain incase they need it for a transient guest, they can accommodate obviously within the window that I will be gone. Can’t imagine any place renting your slip out longer than you’ll be away . dealing with that situation when you come back is ridiculous

4 hours away for me. I really don’t mind it at all. When your job is in a landlocked area you do what you have to.
Holy moly. I’m about 15 minutes from my slip and get annoyed when I get a slow driver that extends that to 20.

Right now I’m in a constant state of low-level panic because my boat’s wintering in Charleston - a 12 hour drive.

Yikes! I would not be able to deal with that. I need to stop by every couple weeks and check on it -- especially since the boat next to mine has a huge tear in the shrinkwrap. I need to put on a shrinkwrap door tomorrow so I can keep an eye on the inside.

25 mins away and feel exactly the same way.

Personally I always felt is should be a partnership between the slip holder and the marina. If I rent for the entire year/season then they should give me the option to list and sublet my slip while I am away. The marina would then act as dockmaster and collect the fees, check insurance and apply a credit of a predetermined percentage to my account. This works for both parties involved.

This is exactly what my marina does. If I'm going to be away I am happy to let the marina office know my slip is available. I get the revenue of about $145 per night and the marina gets a small service fee. We boat out of a very desirable tourist area. We do a lot of cruising in summer. I get a big fat check in the mail within 2 days of returning. Not bad!

I am seriously impressed with the distance some of you drive. Really, no joke, you guys are hardcore boaters. I just don’t know how you deal with maintenance. There are days I have run home 3 times in 1 morning cause I needed a tool I forgot or didn’t think I needed. I guess you real good at planning ahead.

I have to give everyone credit to drive that far to get to your boats. Mine wouldn't be getting used that much if I had to drive 3 hrs to get to it! I'm on mine every night but My docks are in the back yard at both of my houses so that makes it easy. Again hats off to all with long drives to your boats!

No... there is a really expensive hardware store right up the road that I am on a first name basis with :).... it just adds to the on boat tool kit :)

I am beginning to understand why we see so many people from PA,NJ, even NY at the marina. Met a couple this summer who drive 3 hours one way to their boat on my pier.
Years ago we lived in Allentown and kept the boat at Skipjack... the drive was not really that far but the traffic was horrible... rush hour both ways on the weekend near philly was a nightmare

I live 10 minutes from my marina but do know someone who drives 4 hours from the Philly suburbs to the Finger Lakes at least twice a month. Crazy.

As far as renting to transients, my marina doesn’t do that and I’d be turned off if they did. I’m not away from the dock for extended periods very often but even when I am I leave things behind that I’d rather were there undisturbed when I got back.

2 minute drive to my Marina.. Can't imagine driving hours to get to my boat, you guys are dedicated!

Around Eastern Mass many drive 1-3 hours every weekend to there cottages in NH, Maine, Vt or down on Cape Cod. What's the difference? I know some people that drive 1-2 hrs to work each way every day.

What's the difference? ...Umm time? I get the point that you will appreciate the boat a little more if you have to drive a few hours to get to it. But if I'm not on vacation in the summer, I'm still on my boat almost every night after work in the summer from 4pm-9 or 10pm sometimes. If I had to drive 1-3 hours to get there I would likely be only on it weekends!

Anyway, don't want to hijack the thread anymore. Feel blessed to be close to my marina and I commend you crazies' that drive 2+ to get to your boat :D

I live on the west side of Washington state, it's a little wetter on this side than eastern Wash. and I used to vacation on the east dryer/hotter side of the state, 3+ hour drive dragging my ski boat. I made an offer on a property on the Columbia river before I bought my 300 WE, thank God it was turned down. I then focused on buying a boat I could sleep on, my vacations start 5 minutes from my house now and I upgraded to our 450 DA...
