Need TTMOT’s help Onan to MFD

Lastly, programming the J2K100 needs to be done through a Maretron display like a DSM410... It's intuitive but unless you have the expensive Maretron software it's the only way to do it. I understand that Maretron will program it and supply it as a specialized item so look into that if you don't plan to acquire the display. This is the Maritron display showing the generator data and the corresponding data on my VV7 (note this shows voltage between L1 and N and has since been changed to show L1 to L2 which is 240V-

I thought I would attach this so it is clear on the generator's harness modifications -

In my case, I didn't have a need for a NMEA 2000 drop in the ER. I made the connection to the J1939 connector from the Smartcraft J-box right at the helm where the rest of my NMEA 2000 drops live. I was able to re-purpose part of the original Smartcraft harness that was replaced by a new VesselView harness but also made a connector from scratch so I could test both the Maretron and Yacht Devices converter versions. At one point I had both working at once.

This can be done also however you must verify there are no other data on CAN 3 which is the case for the Cummins Diesel boats. The I/O boats use CAN 3 for a variety of things.

Is is possible to just send the date from the NIM directly to a J1939 connection? My MFD has a J1939, then connects to a VV7 via a Smartcraft-N2K gateway. Would the data flow to all devices using this manner?

If you go back and do a search on the efforts we did last year on this subject it was tried and couldn't get it to work. I seem to remember that Al @alnav actually hooked it up and couldn't get it to work with a Garmin J1939 MFD port. I suspect that the Garmin MFD's don't recognize the PGN's for a generator on SAE J1939. Raymarine or others may.

I didn't actually make the hook-up because the Garmin documentation indicates it only reads certain specific brand(s) of engines (Yamaha, I think) and only engine (no electrical) PGNs. Garmin has had J1939 ports for a while now so they may have made them more capable and not said so, which is typical.

Lovely... Ok so i will get a monitor, how hard is the programming?

@ocgrant Programming is easy. Using the Maretron display first set up the J2K100 converter so it can see the generator's data then set up the display on how you would like to view things. All menu driven. Read the manual.... If you like I can take pics of each step.
