After 12 seasons of use and 900+ hours on the meter, I am looking to paint my blue hulled '05 340 Dancer. I was planning to use AwlCraft paint and had this discussion with my marina in the fall. However, apparently AwlCraft does not have an exact match for the Sea Ray blue color, and I am really not keen on changing the shade of it as I really like the original Sea Ray colour. An option they recommended is using PPG Delfleet paint from the Essential line, which is an automotive paint, but can be matched exactly. Both are polyurethane paints. Anyone have any experience with either of these? Can the AwlCraft paint be matched or has anyone used one of the existing colours to match with success? I am not a paint expert, but I am concerned about using an automotive paint for marine use?

Have you considered wrapping it instead of paint? Much cheaper, maybe not as durable of course but I've heard good things about wrapping over paint.

You would also be able to get an exact color match I would think.

We painted ours the yard suggested Alexseal as it’s the easiest to repair if needed he did say they offer the big 3 brands and most of his 80’-100’ers are all using Alexseal ask about repairs using Awlgrip.

Go check Andy out at Boat works today he has a whole series on what you are going to do with a product called Alexseal it's worth your time to check it out on you tube.

+1
Don’t let them feed you a line about the ease of repairing awlgrip. It isn’t easy. I believe Alex seal was made by the same chemists that originally produced awlgrip. There is a lot of info on you tube about it. Boat works today has a ton of good info on it! I wouldn’t use anything else!

I had my hull painted 4 years ago flagship blue using awlgrip.Looks like new, love it
Flagship blue does appear to be the closest match when I compare to the available colors. Did you notice much of a difference in color after the job was done?

Awlgrip is the most durable of the paints but also the hardest to repair if/when needed.

Awlcraft is a different formula. It’s a bit softer than Awlgrip, but can be repaired more easily. It can be buffed out using something like 3M Finesse It.

I have considered wrapping. It is about half the cost of painting, but I've heard that it has a 4-5 year life before needing to be redone. I am also concerned about how that would affect the resale. Many performance boats are wrapped, but they spend most of their life on a trailer, not up against a dock for 6 months of the year.

For me the only difference I noticed was how good the finished job looked. They painted the hull , stripe and three scallops. A good new paint job will make your boat look new.good luck with whatever you pick.

We have Awlgrip and it is a pain to repair. It can be damaged by cleaning products like deck cleaner so care has to be taken using plenty of rinse. Fenders (even with fleece covers) can dull the surface very quickly, so near and far side tie offs that hold the boat away from the dock are a better choice.
