Just saw on National News that a Boat coming from the Bahamas with 20 people on board is missing, search is underway......

I was thinking the same thing, that's 10' shorter than my boat no way I would put 20 people on my boat and go out on the river much less The Bahamas....it's sad because it's sure not looking good, couple of days now..they left Monday....

WOW! I hope they find them island hopping instead of the worst.

Holy Crap... Praying for all onboard...

From what I have read there have been some heavy seas around FL these last few days. Doesn't sound like a good time to be in the Gulf Stream in an overloaded boat.

There are some oddities being reported by the press (I know that never happens, LOL). I truly hope these people are safe, but wow, where do you put 20 people in a 29-foot Mako Cuddy Cabin??? Seems they would have been sitting on top of each other.

And... this strange reference attributed to the USCG "If this turns out to be a smuggling boat that does not want to be found, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jose Hernandez says safety is the priority. “We don’t know if it is or not,” he said. “Regardless, the Coast Guard is committed to the safety of all mariners."

Quite strange mostly due to the complete lack of details.

Lived in West Palm Beach for 15 years. Not considering the Covid issues, the Bahamas are very popular for boating "snow birds" this time of year. But that is typically cruising sailboats, trawlers and yachts 40ft and up. And most of those would travel in October-November. This is not the time of year to be running to the islands in a 29' Mako.

But this is the most interesting, "suspected human trafficking"

Was on a different forum earlier today, the lament was 8-10 seas out of government cut. That is NOT gulfstream, just east wind in the Atlantic this time of year.

Rough waters for sure.

When we kept a boat there, not that hard to find a window to get to the keys. The challenge was getting back without getting beat to death.

If it was a citizen of the Bahamas or a US citizen don’t you think people would’ve reported missing persons, with names of the lost that would’ve made it to the news that all these people were lost at sea?

Monitoring this story with interest, as it’s a trip I’d like to make someday. When is the right time of year to make this type of trip? (Bimini to Lake Worth). Id do Fort Lauderdale/Miami to Bimini and back. As I understand it, this shouldn’t have been more than a 2 hour trip. What’s the minimum size of boat you need to make this trip?

Sometimes you just can`t fix stupid.
Should have had an epirb at the least

People do it on jet skis in groups.

Weather window is the most important
Having a schedule that allows for several days delay is best, pressure to be there or be home on a given date is where people get in trouble.
April to June is popular
June 1st starts hurricane season and can have insurance implications.

This incident is not typical

Summer months are best. Some days flat calm/mirror conditions. June-August are best. But you can easily run into a squall.

In terms of size boat, any size boat is fine during summer. It’s the limited range of smaller boats and single engine craft that run into trouble at times but by going w flotilla that risk is minimal.

I’ve been to the inlet in Ft Pierce all through these holidays and there is no way in hell anyone was going out unless they wanted to get pounded before capsizing. Most boats wouldn’t make it through this inlet.

this story was all BS... no names or any people claiming to be missing. This was a ruise to send the coast guard on a hunt up north so someone could sneak in something from the south. Someone in the bahamian government must have gotten paid to call this in.... 20+ kilos of coke were found floating off of Marathon by a fisherman on the same monday this was called in. Think about it.....
