The surveyor told us that the detectors in the boat we just bought were original (19 years old) and to replace them asap. The previous owner purchased some residential Kidde CO2 detectors, but I swear I read somewhere that there was a generator kill wire for marine detectors. That sounds like a good idea. Is this a major project for an 01 280 DA?

A kill wire? As in shutting them off when the generator is running? I sure hope not!

if u have a gas boat Co2 detectors needs to work period.

Is it how I wrote the first post???

I'm replacing the detectors. I don't think the cheap Kidde brand residential detectors are adequate. If I buy marine detectors, is it a big job to add a kill switch so the generator is disabled if the detector detects CO2?

No its not difficult if you have some mechanical and wiring skills

Assuming the new detector has an auxiliary contact
And assuming you have the wiring diagrams for you generator

Some gas generators have a built in CO detector so that if CO builds up in the bilge it shuts the generator down. Happened to me last week while testing the gen with the hatch open on a slight slight breezy day that was pushing the exhaust right back into the boat.
I have my built in CO detector and I have two standard CO detectors on the boat from Home Depot. Plus the one on the generator, that is sufficient for overnight stays with the gen running.

I bought a couple of the Kiddie CO2 detectors last year and they false alarmed without the generator running and all hatches wide open. I gave in and replaced then original 36 year old CO2 detectors with new marine 12v units and all is good now.

I like the idea of one in the engine compartment, one in the cockpit for running with full canvass up, and one in the cabin. I'll talk to my mechanic about running them 12v and adding a "kill circuit" for the gen.

Good project and pretty straight forward. Fire Boy-Xintex manufactures a generator shut-down relay along with their 12/24 dc wired marine unit. They also manufacture AA battery powered marine unit. https://www.fireboy-xintex.com/marine-carbon-monoxide-detector-cmd5-m/

We maintain two wired units and two AA battery units, backup the backup, not something to mess with ya know. It’s recommended to replace them every 5yrs, personally we treat em as a regular maintenance item, replace them every 4 years regardless.

Boat Us has a nice general CO2 write up
