480 DB Owners Club

Where did you put the Vitrifrigo ice maker? I liked the Summit drawers, but need an Icemaker in the galley.

apologies for the late response our boat has a spot in the cockpit stbd side for an ice maker. It’s 110vac only which is fine for us I didn’t think they made 48” fridge freezers in dual voltage all the appliances that came with our boat where 110vac only

Ok thanks, yeah mine came with the 110only subzero units, but my 480DB cockpit does not have a spot made for an Icemaker and haven’t seen other 480s w/ them in cockpit, would like to see a photo next chance you get, might be an option for me. thanks.

Hey guys quick update and a quick question.

Picked up my new to me 480 on Saturday. Headed up the AICW from just south of Charleston on Sunday, currently moored in Wrightsville Beach ant the Bridge Tender Marina. Took a nice run outside and around Frying Pan Shoals and my motors hummed right along for hours. I am definitely sub 18.5 GPH @ 1800 RPM.

The issue I'm having id the Glendenning Cablemaster. First day out I was unable to reel the cable back in. The motor was turning but it was so cold I was guessing it could not coil the cable into the bin. I shoved the cable into the hole where the water hose comes out. Upon arrival at the next stop I had to reel out the entire cable length in order to connect to shore power. This morning I was hoping to reel it all in since it was warmer, but the motor didn't even begin to spin or anything. What should I check first? Is there a fuse or relay? I can hear the motor spin if it hit the switch to "out" but not a single sound if I push it to "IN".

It could be a faulty toggle switch. Mine does the same thing periodically. The PO told me about it and said his solution (which worked) was to toggle the switch up and down rapidly and that's how he got it to work. I sprayed electrical contact cleaner on the switch connections and that seems to have fixed the problem. I purchased a new toggle switch but have not installed it yet. Hope this helps. Mike

There are so many micro switches on that unit so it sounds like since it will work out but that one of the sensor rollers is tripped thinking the cable is binding and not letting you go in. You might have a stuck roller switch. You have to get down there and see that all the roller switches in the cable line are free and not "depressed" or stuck.

I am heading down there tonight, but I think you will be gone. If there, give m a call me I will find you. Send me a private message .

As far as the cablemaster, the breaker is in the panel under the cockpit steps. I don't believe that's your issue but it will trip if the cord is bound up and you hold the switch too long. I agree it sounds like either the toggle switch is bad or maybe the max in/out switch is tripped. You can also adjust the spacers that grip the cord by adding or removing discs but sounds like you need to get the motor working in each direction first.

As far as fuel burn, keep in mind that 1800 is the hot spot for EGT's. You want to be able to run at 2000 RPM to keep the temps down.

I was going to comment at the rpms should be around 1950 , 1800 is too low.
I believe he jammed the cord into the barrel and not the motor is fighting itself and possibly popped the breaker. Try pulling the cord all out and reset the breaker

Sorry, just saw this message... We caught the first scheduled opening of the Wrightsville Bridge @ 0700 this morning. after a long day of 100% ICW we wound up at River Dunes Marina near Oriental N.C.

So the cablemaster seems like the "fully out" limit switch was triggered. BUT that made it so I could not operate the "IN" direction, but the out direction would turn even though all the cable was out. I pushed in on the cable real hard, the switch must have released. Cablemaster functional. Are the limit switches reversed? There does seem like a spot where it no longer grips the cable, the motor turns but the cable won't fully retract. It leaves about 10 feet hanging out.

Yeah, I guess I was remembering Tony Athens quote about fuel burn incorrectly. I've been running it normally @ 2000rpm while cruising. I'll do another fuel run tomorrow, but it seems like even after removing an inch of pitch out of the props, I might be still burning too much gph.

Tony sez:
"BELOW 18.6 GPH at 2000 RPM and the rest will take care of itself"

The guys at the prop shop thought I had lost my mind when I asked them to take the inch of pitch out....

Next person at their boat, would you please look at the cranking batteries' cover (dual 8Ds on a 2004 480DB) and see if there is a manufacturer name and/or part number? I got an entire battery box, but it's not going to go in without some curse words, would prefer to just source another cover/lid. Thanks

W, sorry it took so long to get back to ya. The lid says todd enterprises Cranston Rhode Island. There is a number imprinted on the lid: 90-2170

Alright guys and gals, I got her to home port! The motors never missed a beat and all the electronics functioned properly, even autopilot 100%. I even have photographic evidence of 18.5 GPH at 2000 rpm! I'm liking this boat!

We did have two issues that are relatively minor. Guest head vacuum generator looks to not be able to create vacuum. Anybody know if these are 1.5 inch duckbills? I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.... Yuck.

Second Issue, The Splendide Wrinklemaster, worked for a bit just in dryer mode. Tried it a second time and the cycle selector started rotating at about 1-2 rpm and water began filling the tub. Is it operator error or a mechanical issue?

I believe WDR is looking for the mains battery box in the lazarette which holds two 8D’s. I looked at mine last week and didn’t see any obvious part # markings.

The Todd thruster boxes hold single 8D’s.

Happy New Year. I just got my boat back in the water last week after a strut repair, waxing, and cutlas bearings. While the boat was out I had the props sent off for a tune up, which is why I’m late on getting her winterized.

On the sea trial to check for vibrations, the port side gauges on the console would not light up or work. That included all the analog and digital gauges. The starboard gauges worked fine. I checked the breakers and they appeared on. The batteries are new last spring so I don’t think they are the problem. The gauges worked fine prior to the haul out.

When the boat was on the hard the battery banks were turned off. I turned them on when the boat was put back in the water. The boat started fine and ran fine. No alarms or warnings sounded. Where do I start looking for the problem? Is there a fuse somewhere that I need to look for?

The boat is winterized now and it will be a spring issue unless I figure out the answer. The boat shop says they will look at it in the spring also. Due to what work was performed (Strut and prop work), I don’t think they did anything to cause the problem.

Keith

Now I just gotta hope that these props still look like this once I get home. I'll be bringing her home after Christmas from Charleston and really concerned about shoaling along the intracoastal. Any tips for getting the latest info along the way? I'll be using Navionics on an iPad for my route planning and primary charting.
