Trojan Express Yachts...input?

Having owned a Trojan 10 meter MC (1989) for 6 years I can say they where built like battleships when they came out of Lancaster PA. The wide beam and wide chines made for a very comfortable ride in all sea conditions. Downside was due to that wide beam and heavy weight she was a thirsty boat, less than 1 nautical mile per gallon with the 454 Crusaders. The engines were set wide apart and docking was a breeze. Boat was above average condition when i purchased but I still put a lot into it doing upgrades (25 year old boat). Sold when gas approached $6.00 gal. We looked any many for the next cruiser and the 370 Sundancer came out on top.
When Carver took over they destroyed the molds and started fresh with there designs. Most of the older Internationals that were diesel came with Detroit 671's and 892's in the larger 13 meter.
I also looked long and hard at the Trojan 44 as she is a big girl for a 44 (51ft. stem to stern).
Unless you are willing to work or pay to have work done I would definitely look at what Sea Ray has put out over the years. Our 1995 was pristine when we purchased and we are the 3rd owners.

Not to dig up an old thread but I happened to stumble upon a 2000 44 Trojan Carver Express. Have to admit, we are kind of impressed with the boat online. It's big, looks modern to me, has Volvo TAMD 74 engines (not my absolute favorite) and i dig the stern layout with the large swim platform.

99% sure we will get a 99-02 400/410 Sea Ray but I'd be lying if I said this Trojan doesn't interest us.

Not sure why you would go on a SeaRay biased website and ask if you should buy a Trojan. Personally, I think those Trojans look nice. But I certainly wouldn’t be going on a C Ray base website to ask for a boat outside of a sea ray. Just my two cents worth.

I have that boat, but 2 years older, and love it.

He is probably asking on this forum, because it is active, and probably the best boating forum out there. (That I have found anyways). Not many Trojan (Carver) forums out there.

I'm glad you continue to contribute with content, and sponsor the site while searching for your next boat.

Guy a couple slips down from us has a '98 440 Express w/QSM-11's, and absolutely loves it. He had a custom hard top made for it by a guy that used to work for Tiara down in Holland, and it looks fantastic. If you go see that boat I think you'll be impressed by how cavernous the lazerette/trunk is.

I ask on here because it's large group of knowledgeable boaters with a ton of experience in the cruising sector. If I was shopping for a large custom sport fisherman I wouldn't be asking this group. However, it doesn't matter to me what the brand of boat is this is a great site.

It's also good idle boat chat for the dead of winter for most of us.

Kind of like asking about BMW vs MB. I am sure that group of buyers are familiar with each brand regardless of the choice they made.

Cruising through some of the receipts to the work done to the boat of interest. One required engine out for an oil pump and bracket repair along with some other minor things. $16k!! I've been boating about 35 years now and my repairs added up over all those years aren't 16k!

Yup, Volvos can be pricey. Volvo as a company is nothing like Mercury/ Mercruiser. All communication is through dealers who may, or may not, give a $hit having boat owner customers. If you find a good dealer life is grand, if your local dealer works on boats as a fill in business when not working on trucks, not so grand. The TAMD has a reputation as a solid engine and is mostly mechanical (as opposed to our D6s that are computerized down to drive by wire controls). That may be a plus as finding the EVC computer components can be challenging.

I almost bought a 400 carver/trojan this past summer - it was repowed and immaculate including new canvas and sea deck - the layout below was very open - a truely turn key boat for 52k - ended up with a condo instead - on the plus side, sea trialing a center console today!

There are quite a few Trojan 440's around our area. Cool looking boat but every one I've ever seen must be overpropped because they are all very sooty after running.
