Firearms on boats

I'm also a retired LEO so covered under the LEOSA laws. In theory I'm able to carry in every state but I certainly would avoid NY and NJ.

Them right coasters don't go no sense of huma when it comes to guns.

I've also been shot at (guy had a 12guage) so I know what that feels like. I introduced him to my "One and Done" program. That put a quick end to whatever it was he had in mind.

You shouldn’t have a problem in NY or NJ if you have proof that you, and what you’re carrying, qualify under the LEOSA on you.
The only two things you should avoid are:
1. Hollow points in NJ where they are illegal.
2. Magazine with capacity of more than 10 rounds in NY where that are illegal except for active “Police Officers” from agencies inside NYS, or retirees from those same agencies if they possessed those magazines before they retired and continue to qualify with them.

funny as NY cops we where always told to avoid a few states as they hate NY cops.

Only place I’ve ever heard that about was Virginia, but they are apparently a different breed there.
We had a case in common once with a small department in Virginia and developed a good relationship with them and they told us that the State Police will pull over a marked car from another Virginia department and give them a ticket.
Several years later, as a Pct. CO, I dealt directly with a Chief from another small department down there on a mission of mercy, we got pretty friendly and he told me the same thing.
On the other hand: Back in 2002 I was pulled over by a State Trooper in VA while driving through on my way home from a vacation and he was extremely professional and courteous to the point that he even came to attention and saluted after seeing my ID.
Got similar positive feedback from a friend who was attending the FBI academy around that time.
Like anything else, it probably comes down to the individuals and circumstances involved in any specific interaction.

Marked car stop? Holy. I was stopped on the LIE in an unmarked pick up by Nassau HP after ID and ID the vehicle as a Dept vehicle he still wanted to push the issue I was professional and courteous he was not so I asked him to write the ticket or I’m leaving he stood shaking his head so I pulled out into traffic leaving him in that spot.

I’ve seen the State police stop a school bus, an ambulance, other cops, nobody is above the law in Virginia. God help you if your window tint on the front windows is too dark. I had a friend almost go to jail when the same trooper stoped him a second time.

The thing is some may think it’s wrong to stop another state or municipal vehicle but in all of those cases the stops were justified. Driving an emergency vehicle does not give you the right to negligent operation and flagrant disregard for traffic laws. I have never had an encounter with an unprofessional trooper in VA or MD. They keep a higher level of professionalism than local or county police.

We keep a firearm on our boat in WV... my wife and I both have our CC permit.

I have a conceal carry permit in Wisconsin and I cannot carry in any of my bordering states. Mn,Ill or Mich. I was boarded once by the coast guard on Lake Michigan. The first thing they asked was if I have firearms on board. (I didn’t which is rare) they were very friendly and professional. I never felt like I was being interrogated.
Check with your CPL Licensing department, you should be able to carry in every state in the union except NY and ILL.
What made you think you couldn't carry in Michigan?

I haven't yet as traveling in FL is no big deal but taking it to the Bahamas is a whole different story. I have seen the police come to the dock and inspect a boat next to me as a "random" gun inspection. He had to declair exactly how many bullets he had, they inspected the gun and counted his bullets on the back deck. I said what a pain, no need to deal with this unless I am island hopping for a month or so in the middle of the Bahamas.
