Hailing a Marina?

On one trip to Alaska we called ahead for a slip. Marina manager said tell me the length from the tip of your anchor to the end of you dinghy. If you fib to me your boat will not fit. We have very limited space.
If you are from eastern Canada they say the length from the tip to end of the swim platform in the west we say our boat length is the part that sits in the water. Easterners tend to like to impress westerners tend to like to be correct. Marinas want to know how much room you will need.

This is what I got in Solomon's Island Maryland. Told them I need a 50' slip. They asked me what kind of boat I had....450. "ok, the dock hand will guide you to your slip". Their logic was a 45' boat can squeeze into a 40' slip. Guy says, "man, you're sticking out at least 10 feet". I said I know, that's why I asked for a 50 foot slip. The boat is 51'4" overall.

My marina owner charges my annual slip and storage fees by the model name of the boat. My 270 AJ was charged 27" for storage, and the 30; minimum for the slip. The Back Cove 34 was charged at 34' when the overall length was 38' 5". He'll charge me for 37 on my BC 37, even though the hull length is 38' and the overall length is 42'. Same slip for all 3 boats. I guess it's the bigger boat tax.

When we first got the boat I would say anywhere from 48-52' then couldn't remember what I had told various transient marinas. Now I just use 50' for Dockwa and anywhere we make reservations and haven't had an issue.

OMG. Few years back we had 4 boats goin St Michaels, July wknd, friend tasked with makin the reservations forgot. Friday morn we left he says “I got this”. We get there, no reservations, no slips for us, he goes nuts on the dock master, tells him he is Dr Hegde,

Good god! I have had boat stories y’all would not believe! Like the guy on overboard. It’s a hell of a day at sea sir!
My wife loves that movie. We quote that line all the time. Kind of an uncool way to get slips, though.

Head of surgery at Johns Hopkins. How could they lose our reservations! We got 4 nice slips! Hedge repod cars at night for a living. Ya, true story!

I'm not sure what's worse, actually being a pretentious a-hole throwing your job/title around to get a reservsation or pretending to be a pretentious a-hole to get those reservations? Feels...slimy.

When I was in a bind at a marina this summer, looking for an extra night that I did not reserve, I handed the dock master $100 and told him I hoped he could find me room. He did. And I didn't feel like a tool the next day :)

My 2010 310 measures 31 LOA but the CG document says 28 foot water line length go figure? I'm always concerned with beam because I do NOT like rubbing poles! This is a case of bigger or wider slips are better and I have no problem paying for a bigger slip.

That $100 trick didn't work for me... I took the family down to Sinbads on the Detroit river to take the bus down to a Tigers game... (What the heck happened to Sinbads?) The dock master gave us the best slip up against the parking lot... said he would take care of the boat when we were gone... I thought what a nice guy... I gave him $100.... Two hours later he was gone... We went to the night game.. came back to find 15 people on the dock around the boat and standing on the swim platform taking pictures at 10:00 at night.. Lesson was be careful on the tip amount

Nose bleed seats that night.... stadium was so empty we moved down to field level

Well...I mean...Detroit. You sure he was the dock master? ha. The hundy worked in Saugatuck, MI but I'm not sure I'd have even tried it in Detroit :):)

He was riding a bike up and down the dock while on the radio and said he was staying in the barge/break wall for the night at the end of the dock..... right up to the minute he got a $100 bill :)

He probably high-tailed it down to Bazookies and invested that $100....

Years ago, before they built the "United Center" here in Chicagoand cleaned up the area, there was the "Chicago Stadium. The surrounding area was run down slums and there wasn't much parking so often you would park on the surrounding streets. Often there would be young kids hanging around. Sometimes they would ask "Watch your car mister"? If you would tip them $5 or more your car would be golden. If you ignored them you might be missing hubcaps or worse....

That was back when I went to many concerts held there... got to be a regular practice... never had a problem

Ya, he was an a-hole. Had a bunch of boats depend on him and he decided to do the back-door thing. But if you think it ain’t done by big shots throwing their weight around you’re kidding yourself.

Anyone who pulls that kind if crap is a real jerk. It doesn't matter if you're an actual big shot or just pretending to be one.
