Hey everyone,

I'm currently looking at an 2006 Sundancer 44. It's a very clean and well kept boat with just over 1000 hours on the diesel engines. Being new to this market I am curious if $275K USD is a fair price. I came across another one with lower hours last night that sold for $75K less. I just worry about being that newbie that gets taken advantage of for being naive. Any thoughts and help are welcome.

Get an agent. Tell them what you want, what you want to pay and the condition you want it in. In 2003 I created a detail list of what we wanted and passed it out to every agent we met at the Seattle boat show. At the bottom of the note in bold was IF YOU CALL ME ABOUT A BOAT THAT DOES NOT HAVE ALL THE ABOVE ITEM I WILL NEVER TALK TO YOU AGAIN. Two years later I got a call saying we have the boat you asked for. He was correct.

Where is the boat located? That has a lot to do with the price.

Great boat by the way. We have had ours for 4 months now and absolutely love it...

That’s a tough call without knowing fresh/saltwater, location, maintenance records, overall condition, broker/private, options ... you are at the high end for sure but might be justified if perfect

Welcome to the forum, Its a good Idea to fill out your profile with at least the region you are located. You will find members more willing to respond with good information if they have more to work with.
Happy boat hunting

It is a freshwater boat in Canada. I went and saw it last week and fell in love. I am just hoping my lust isn't blinding me to realistic pricing. I thought the price was only a little high until I found that other listing last night.

Thanks for the reply. It is a fresh water boat, located in Canada, full maintenance records since new, in near perfect condition from what I saw, private sale and almost every option.

I didn't realize it wasn't there. Sadly, my boating season is only half of the year if I'm lucky.

I've seen a couple of 2006-'07 FW 44' DA's over here on Lake Michigan with asking prices in the $279k+ in the past few months. FWIW they had diesels, and hydraulic lifts. Best of luck in your search.

That's hilarious!

I would try for $220-$250k US range in this market...

Boats are a little more than used cars. Make sure it is free and clear of all leans, incumbencies, not an insurance claim rebuild and has had all recalls. I used an agent when we got the present boat he did all that. Once you have established that, a good boat and engine survey is require. If you are boring for the boat the bank will probably want you to use a lawyer. We did not; but the agent gave us all the paper work required. Get present owner to sign a release stating he has disclosed all his known details on the boat. That will give you recourse; if you find major damage or engines were not as represented. Join a yacht club in your area as an associate member and spend some time with the members during happy hour and ask about the boat. You can probably go as guest once.

If you are dealing with a boat maintained by St. Clair Boating Centre, then you are in good hands. That's a nice, well-optioned 44DA. Good luck.

Nice location for a used boat due to the short season with no salt or excessive sun wear. Fresh water aboats are however more susceptible to rot in the core. Make sure the surveyor does a good job inspecting all the through hulls for moisture. The boat is the age where fittings need to be rebedded.

This could be the subject of a whole new thread. Isn't that what the buyers due diligence is about?

I doubt there's ever been a transaction where the buyer thinks they could have paid a little less, and the seller thinks they could have sold for a little more.

If you're comfortable with the number and a survey sings praises about the boat, it's meant to be.

Whenever I've bought a boat, I've trusted my gut/heart (don't tell my finance guy!) and have never been let down.

I would say that with any used boat transaction, condition and working order is key. You could buy something for $50k less, but if you have to dump that back in to get it working properly, you should add a headache multiplier to the added expense as well.

I purchased my 2009 boat in 2017 and it was bone stock. Nothing had been replaced or upgraded. I paid a less then market in my opinion because of this. Since then I have upgraded electronics, battery chargers, adjustment on lifters, cockpit Capet, TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners and lots of bits and pieces. Point is if you have records that a number of items are new or updated you can justify an up charge on the purchase price.

Josh, I recently had an independent appraisal completed for my 2006 44DA with 990 hours on Cummins QSC 500 engines, the boat was rated as "overall excellent condition" and "not in need of any repairs or required maintenance". The appraisal was for insurance purposes and the boat is kept in Rhode Island. The results were as follows.
Estimated Fair Market Value as of the date of Survey: $ 260,000.00 USD
Estimated Replacement Cost as of the date of Survey: $ 885,000.00 USD
Valuation data taken from Soldboats.com, Yachtworld.com listings, sailboatlistings.com, and survey database show same but older models ranging from $219,900 to $299,000 .
Recently sold similar boats
2006 $299,000 FL, 2006 $259,900 RI, 2006 $234,000 SC, 2006 $219,900 MO
