This is such a love hate time of year for me

Probably my favorite time of year for boating is the fall - here in North Carolina, the crowds on Lake Norman dwindle and the weather cools just below the scorching August heat. Nothing more fun that buzzing around a dead calm lake and anchoring out in the warm sun without sweating listening to a race or ballgame in the background. You just can't beat it. I love the fall, but hate that winter is next!

It was for sure a strange summer, didn't see any of my lake friends except a passing wave and a couple of anchor ups at a distance. I will say the lake was my salvation, it was the one place that things seem somewhat normal with the craziness of the world around us. It is feeling like a long winter coming on!

I guess the exciting thing is, I think I will be putting the old girl up for sale in the spring -- I have had it for 15yrs, but it's time for an upgrade -- not a big cruiser, just a bigger bowrider that is a little more suited to Lake Norman. I almost traded it last fall, but just could not let it go to a dealer and then who knows where -- really hope I find someone who will enjoy it the way I have. Plus I am pretty darn picky when it comes to the boat, it might take awhile to find the next one. The only way I am going to do it is to sell and not have a boat!

So feeling good about the weather, the prospect of a new boat next year and...this happens!

Bill, I can relate to your feelings of the approach of winter and not wanting to get rid of your boat.

After 10 wonderful years on Beachcomber my wife and I decided to sell her. My wife has balance issues and is finding it more and more difficult to handle lines and fenders while she's on the side walkways, and I had some issues from my chemo and follow on treatments. Selling her at this point in our lives just made sense.

Two friends and I made the ~650 mile trip down the Columbia, around the coast of WA then to Seattle to put her with the SR dealer. It was a great way to end my relationship with the boat and, while I miss her, I know in my heart it was the right time and the right decision.

Same here although our "quiet" season is only September and maybe a couple of weeks in Oct. And that also means catching up on the house odds and ends, raking leaves and then the snow issues. Then it's a long stretch till May's launch.
It was different for us too. We would tie up every weekend and socialize with our lake friends, swim and have a day of fun. This year was rather solitary except for a couple of family members. Seems like it was almost not a boating season.
I wouldn't wait on buying anything. Life goes quick and this ain't a practice run.

Agree 100%. I'm already looking on line for the right diesel pusher Class A for us. It's kinda like the story of
The Three Bears. Not too big, not too small, not too new, not too old, just the right combination of furnishings inside! No matter where any of you live I've probably looked at an RV in your neighborhood.

I should add I did like following along on your adventure...Life is short...live it.

Mandatory for our next one >> King size bed, bath & 1/2 (like we have now), dishwasher, washer & dryer, tag axel and ..... ?

And yes back to the original post, boating this year has been the weirdest season ever.... No club events, no Canada, no more than 4 days at any one time on the boat (wife got a new job due to covid), very much looking to 2021 and hopefully a little more normalcy...

It was a very weird year but the boat absolutely was our salvation. Not sure what we’re going to do this winter. Things look petty bleak. At least I got the lights up. :)

I heard this from a guy at my marina this summer..... the natural human progression is from a sailboat to a power boat to a motor home to a nursing home to a funeral home....

Agreed that boating saved this year for us and many others but it wasn’t all that different once we got the season going. Marinas opened a few weeks late here and even that wasn’t too bad since the spring weather was so cold and windy.

Our one big loss was the cancellation of the annual boating festival that I’ve attended for 12 years running and where I met and eventually married my wife.

We used the boat twice as much as usual and according my wife’s log entries spent 22 nights on the hook often with nobody around.

I’m hoping for a mild winter and early spring.

I went online and checked out some class A motor homes last night. Those things are pretty nice! So much room! Would you tow a car behind you? I see some (if you want to spend the big bucks) even have a little cubby for a smallish car to be stowed down below. James Bond style. :)

Mike, yes, we'll probably tow our GMC Terrain behind it. The place to go to look at what's available in RV's is a site called RV Trader.

You can tailor your search criteria many different ways and it makes the searching so much faster because you don't include the things you don't want like too big/too small, too expensive, too old, diesel vs gas, and you can even specify the brands you want to include in your search.

You can guess where I spend a few hours every day!
