Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper outboard. I see some cheap ones out there, but are they trash?

I bought my tohatu at onlineoutboards and it has been great.

I bought a Tohatsu 20hp this year. Works perfectly. Starts on 2nd pull every time. Really quiet. 5 yr warranty, great motor so far.

You may want to look into a Mercury 2 stroke. I've had a 4hp 1990 and a 3.5 for years. They start on 2nd pull and will run all day. I bought both after I had bought a new 3.5 4 stroke.in 2010. That one only ran the first month I owned it. Good luck....

Tohatsu makes the smaller Mercury outboards. So they are essentially the same. I agree they tend to start on the 2nd pull.

We tried a small yamaha for portability and it ran great but it didn't have reverse. When we spun the powerhead around the pee stream would enter the boat. Cheaper isn't always better. We only used it for one season before going up a few ponies.

I’d love to sell my Mercury 9.9 4 stroke (lightly used) along with my Mercury 310 hypalon dinghy all duded out with Weaver Davits and Weaver lever but no idea what to sell it for!

That's odd. My Tohatsu also had the high-dollar "spin around" reverse option. Never a drop of water over the transom from the cooling system. Weird...

Ya. Went with the Yamaha for the below water exhaust and local availability. Funny thing was we never noticed how the water was getting in the boat until the third trip out with it. We were always looking forward when reverse was used. A damp pant leg helped to point it out.

Looking forward whilst in reverse? Must be a Canadian thing? :):)

I’ve got one with about an hour running time on it that I would be willing to sell too. It’s a 2017.
Great little motor, but turns out to be too heavy for what I wan to use it for.
I’d much rather have a 5 hp 2 stroke couple to a lightweight roll up dinghy for what I’m looking to do.
Would have sold the 9.9 a few years ago but my son convinced me to hold on to it. Not it’s just taking up space in my shed.

Our Mercury 9.9 was stolen 4 years ago this weekend. I went to the boat show in Seattle, Jan. 2017, and did a side-by-side comparison on the Tohatsu vs. Mercury. They are made in the same factory and the money I saved by going Tohatsu, I upgraded to 15hp & electric start. 3+ years running and still couldn't be happier...

Tohatsu is a great outboard but may not fall under the OP's cheap caveat. You can pick up a small Chinese unit on the way cheap, but way cheap is exactly what you will get.

IMO there is no such thing as "cheap" over the long term. It's just a matter of whether you want to spend that same amount of money in dollars, or nickels and dimes.

HIGHLY recommend this. Mine runs like a champ, most times starts first pull. you will not beat the price, I love mine. I've had Mercs, great motors but twice the price.

My son bought a Coleman for use on a Walker tender. His experience wasn't so good. I don't remember what broke, but there were issues getting parts as I recall.
