Realized recently the CG Documentation was expiring in December.

Went online less than a week ago to renew. Received the Certificate of Documentation in the US mail yesterday. Less than a week. Impressed with the efficiency and speed of the process.

One other note. Kept reading that you could renew for more than one year. Going through the process never saw an option to do more than a year. Missed it somehow - so it was one year.

Ugh I mailed in two months ago and still waiting. They had no problem cashing my check a week after I mailed it in though *sighs*

Don't renew too early because they will change your renewal date.... Don't ask me how I know this.
This.

I received a fake renewal letter two months in advance of my expiration date that wanted to charge me $75 for them to process the renewal. I realized it was BS, but decided to go ahead and renew my certificate with the USCG at that time. Now my expiration date is two months earlier than what it was originally.

I tried playing games with documentation process by sending in my renewal one day before expiration hoping that they would extend my documentation date, but it remained the same.

Thinking I read if you were more than 60 days in advance, they change your renewal date.

Mine was inside 60 days, kept the same renewal date.

Just received mine today!

It is possible to do multi-year but it's not easy and you can't use the quick process on pay.gov. I managed to stumble on to how to do it earlier this year. I just tried to re-create the process but couldn't figure it out so I pulled up the forms I had sent in (you can email them).
The process:
First, fill and sign the regular renewal form you probably got in the mail, the CG-1280.

Then fill out the CG-7042 Authorization for Credit Card Transactions form at https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/DCO Documents/NVDC/CG-7042_Credit_Card_Form.pdf?ver=2017-05-09-113141-427.
Fill in this form with your info and the HIN. In section L, check "Other" and fill in "Renewal X years" and the proper amount (years X $26). Put the same amount in section I.
I emailed them in and got the multi-year form in a few days.

This. I used to have a contract supporting NVDC in my portfolio. You have no idea. Moving an organization supporting maritime commerce and other seagoing activities to the hills of West Virginia to support jobs was not the greatest idea.

Yeah honestly the whole thing seems more complicated than it actually is for us recreational boaters. Too many forms and boxes.

I just purchased a new boat. I was told it may take up to 5 months to get my documentation. Worse yet I paid off my old boat in August. As of November 1 the CG did not release the lien on the boat. Almost killed my deal. Formula boats took the trade with the lien hoping they could sort it out quickly.
