Sea Ray 460 Fly

We were finally able to see one of these, and we liked it a lot more than we expected to. The bridge is huge, the layout is pretty nice for the size, the fit and and finish seemed reasonably good, and this one has shafts not pods. It’s a post-2014 Sea Ray, so the quality issues mentioned on this forum are concerning. Does anyone have any direct experience with this model, or know someone who does? Would be interested in any hands-on experience with it. Thanks in advance.
 
My Dr. dockmate has one. Had to have the exhausts redone by Sea Ray, but other than that, he knows nothing about the boat...just like the most dangerous thing in aviation - a Dr. in a Bonanza!!

He ordered it without the hardtop, and of course had to immediately have a canvas cover made.

You would be amazed how many people out there know nothing about their boats. We had a neighbor who didn't even know how to check his oil. His thought was a light would come on if it was low. Lol yeah when its to late.
He asked me why I was always lifting the hatch before I would take the boat out, I told him Im checking the oil. He was so confused. Id rather be safe than sorry, oil is cheap compared to a new engine.

I owned one for about 10 years. It was a great plane. I’m not a doctor so I survived... lol.
 
At least the Cirrus has the parachute.

15000+ hours and there is no substitute for experience and common sense. Rote memory, like many physicians, only gets you so far.
 
so... Im curious now about the 460 Fly, what is the story behind this boat?

I toured a 460 Fly recently. I thought the layout was superb. I didn't see any apparent finish or quality issues.
I did have two problems with the design. I thought the access to the bow was problematic with the first step from the cockpit to the gunwale being tricky then fairly narrow gunwales until I reached the bow area. I wasn't sure my crew (wife) could deal with that. The second problem area was the engine room. I thought it was very cramped and could not see how to easily even check the oil level. My takeaway was that I would probably have to give up on doing any maintenance myself if I owned that boat. A caveat on both problems is that I'm 6'4" and 250 lbs. so a smaller person may have an entirely different perspective.
I was told the boat had also had its underwater exhausts replaced just like the boat Carter described. The original design was apparently a direct exhaust that cavitated at speed and caused vibration, the replacement was the torpedo-like design my boat and lots of other have, I am imagining that probably reduced performance by a some amount but am just guessing. There were also some deck leaks also repaired under warranty.

I guess some people are boaters, and some just happen to own a boat. A boater knows that boats need constant maintenance, and knows their boat inside and out to make sure it’s being done.

I just sold my boat and gave the new owner a thorough walk through of how every system works, and type of maintenance needed. One of the reasons the guy bought it was because I kept it impeccably maintained and could answer detailed questions. I did all the maintenance work myself and kept a detailed log of everything. The day I handed over the keys I even got to the dock early so I could give it a final wash to hand it over clean.
