7.4L MPI Sputtering at Higher RPM's

The coil improved my power a bit, but not the sputtering. I just ordered the injectors from John, you're right - he knows injectors ! I'm still not 100% confident they will correct my problem, but confident enough to give them a try. Stay tuned !

I got new injectors from Boats Unlimited and unfortunately I still have the same problem, sputtering above 3,000 RPM. Thinking about next steps but going back to basics for the moments. Checking timing, Spark Plugs and Compression but I've already been there a month or two ago. Weird problem !

Looking at the Rinda - They have the Techmate Pro, The Techmate Pro C & S...is it just the adapters that come with them that sets them apart ? Can you rent one anywhere ?

I rented one off Ebay once. The guy was in Orlando, and rented it for 50 bucks for the week or something like that. Another option would be to pick up a Fox Marine gateway. More data than a Rinda, and you can run it full time displaying on NMEA2000 or your phone/tablet over bluetooth. What MEFI version are you?

Thanks guys - I'll take anything I can get ! And of course would be happy to pay for a rental....will look into the Fox Marine. I don't know what version I have, how do you find out ? My engines were installed in the Spring of 2000, they are 7.4 MPI's. S/N 0L395734 & 35.

From what little I know about the digital interface, these engines do not tell you a whole lot about how they're performing. But I could easily be wrong....I've never connected a computer to them.

Pulled my spark plugs again yesterday, no rust and they look normal. It's got to be something in the ignition, I replaced the entire distributor about a month ago but it was a cheap-o distributor off of eBay and the engine did the same thing. So I'm going for a new Distributor Control Module and maybe a coil. I've replaced the coil but it was one that I got at Napa....do you know if there anything special about Merc coil's ?

Mine are 395026 and 7. They are MEFI-3, although one was changed to a 4B. I don't believe any factory engine came with anything after 3. 4B was a replacement fix after the 3's ran out. Someone closer to that will chime in, I'm sure.

I'd take up Scoflaw on his Rinda around the corner. Might get a lot more insight than what the box will show you. For full time monitoring, look into the Fox-Marine units.
Mechanical, fuel, ignition, air, outside interference (foul bottom, etc) all have the opportunity to play a role. The frustrating part, is any one of them can exhibit similar symptoms.

Thanks 370,

So I must have a MEFI-3. I'm going to take him up on the offer, he PM'd me his phone and I'll get in touch with him today. Thanks !
