Official 400EC thread

My 92 express does NOT have the blocks, and when I sit its not the best view/vantage point for driving. The guys 94 next to me has them, and what a difference. Im planning on adding them to both sides this winter.
Talon,
Did you raise the seat up? It looks like it is sitting higher than mine does. Looks good by the way, and I like the armrest/cupholder too!

I took a look at the helm seat blocks on my 98 and they are 3’’ high on the drivers side 1’’ on the passenger side.

I have a question regarding the floor locker near the sink. I am getting water more like moisture. Anyone else have this issue?? Any idea where the water may be coming from?

Also, it appears that their may have been a rug in there that was removed and the locker seems to be sealed. I’m thinking it may be coming from the refrigerator. Any thoughts??

Any thoughts??

How is your cabin door? Ours leaks, and when it does - it drips right in front of the fridge and the carpet gets wet. Our issue is the windshield/canvas - dripping onto the dash (fwd of the cabin door) which then leaks through the sliding door frame. Takes a decent rain for that to all come together.

One of my winter projects is to pull the original QS 7.5 generator out and replace it. Any suggestions on the best way to remove it?

I used a 1 ton chain hoist hanging off a forklift while drydocked.
Remove the lag screws holding it down, disconnect fuel, water, exhaust, slide forward a bit, up-up-away..

Easy.

Thanks for the tip on the removal. Just brought it home last week for the winter. The generator will crank and run for about 5 seconds before it stalls. I was going to pull it and bring it to the local generator shop for diagnostics and repair. The cost to have them come out and do the diagnostic is outrageous ($750) The generator has less than 150 hours on it.

The blocks on my helm seat are 3" tall, and 1" tall on the Port seat.

Really?? Wow, I’m going to call Sea Ray tomorrow. Maybe the can shed some light on this issue. I’ll keep you posted.

I don’t have any water on the carpet, I think it may be coming from the refrigerator. Need to do some more investing. I bought the boat last year never really checking this locker. I noticed it this year when I discovered an odor and when I opened this locker I seen about 2 inches of water. I vacuumed it up, and I’m noticing some dampness and very little water. Another though it may be condensation from when I run the A/C. This is probably going to be one of these things that is going to drive me nuts until I find it..

Do you have the factory Norcold fridge? Mine sat on a piece of plywood, which was screwed to fiberglass floor. I dont see how the fridge could leak, without getting the carpet wet, let alone get into that storage locker. The fridge itself does not have a condensate drain, so it would have to leak through the door seals. If the fridge leaked out towards the back side, it would run into the aft bilge area (under the steps). Is there existing carpet in that area, where you could feel up towards the sides to see which direction the water is entering?

I just went down to my boat to check if any water was in the locker again, and yes there was. I also checked under the steps. and once again I found more water. I noticed a drain tube coming into the lower compartment under the stairs. I have a feeling the drain hose is coming from the shower sump pump.

Paul,
If you replace the QS generator let me know if its in working order. I have a friend that may be interested in it.

When I bought my boat (1994 400EC) it had an inoperable Quicksilver 7.5 generator. I disconnected fuel, water, exhaust and electrical connections then partially disassembled it in place. I removed everything I could, exhaust, intake, etc. What was left, I was able to lift out by hand (I think ). If not by hand I had the marina lift it out by forklift when they put the replacement unit, a Kohler 5E, in place. The Kohler generator, with under 200 hours on it, was taken off my 1989 280DA that was totaled by Hurricane Sandy. I have had the Kohler in my boat since 2013. It now has 1910 hours on it. For the most part the 5kw generator handles the needs in the boat. Sometimes, when I am using the stove, I need to turn other things off so that I don't overload her, but it works well.

I guess I am lucky, mine still has the carpet in it. I store some engine parts (extra spark plugs, plug wires, fuel and oil filters, etc.) along with the vacuum hose and attachments and the food for the dog in that compartment. It is getting some moisture in there as some of the loose fuel filters rusted. I was not too concerned about it because I noticed it after the winter I left the boat uncovered in Mystic, CT, while doing the repower. I have not seen standing water in there but have had some spills from the sink and fridge that I know got into the compartment (like the time my son tipped over a cooler dumping the ice and water onto the floor ) (I don't keep the coolers in the cabin anymore....)

Thanks, this is very informative!! This will give me a good start!!
