Looking for a little more info on your specific needs. What type boating/where are you boating? Looks like you are in CO. So assuming inland water...

If your looking for something to get local weather radar and keep an eye on the sky, your VHF marine radio with weather alert turned on and a smart phone/watch app will give the quickest and most up to date view of things brewing up. For the record this is what I do. Best part is you probably already own this stuff and it’s cheap if not free.

I have marine radar, but it’s function is mostly collision avoidance. It will pick up weather, but long after I know it’s coming using the VHF and smart phone app.

SiriusXM has hardware to add weather, but it’s expensive, limited and the radar display are delayed depictions. The value in this setup is it works out of cellular range if your running offshore, but you at least have something, and marine radar is much better at finding weather in large open water.

You'll need a Sirus XM receiver antenna from Garmin, and a subscription to the Sirius XM marine weather service. The antenna lists for about $700, and the minimum monthly subscription for the service on Garmin equipment is is $35/month. They have various levels of service, with higher levels aimed at boaters that are seriously into fishing.

I agree that a smart phone with weather notifications may be a more efficient solution.

Thank you guys for the reply...I'm in the process of putting in a GMR 18HD+ and didn't know if there was something I could mate to it...I'm on a reservoir right now with hopes of someday going down the Mississippi into the gulf...I have a weather app on my phone but it seems seldom right...would seem I need to explore the VHF with maybe a different weather app on my phone...thanks again guys, you have been a great help...Bob

one more question, which is the best local weather app for iphone?

The radar would be able to pick up storms and rain coming in, but it’s not really the main purpose. You would need to be running it zoomed out for that, and that would limit your ability to see closer marine targets.

If you have not already done so, consider the Garmin Fantom Radar. The Doppler function is very useful and as a solid state some it uses very little power.

Some pix of what NEXRAD radar looks like with Sirius weather. There is a slight lag of updates

but it is essentially a live image of what is happening around you. Very useful information when you are in the open waters with no place to hide

MyRadar. Closest thing to real time, and has been very accurate where I am.
Shows HD radar, wind direction and speed overlays, and notifications. It tells me it's going to rain in 5 minutes, and it does.
FREE.

thank you guys, this has been a great help...Bob

I use MyRadar, Storm Radar by the Weather Channel and RadarNow! depending on Apple or Android (I have both). One of the best features is to look for lightning detection. That will give you a good indication of the weather you don't want to be out in. Rain is one thing, a thunderstorm or severe thunderstorm is entirely different animal.

Yes, that makes good sense, I downloaded myradar and have not quite figured it out yet, hope to put it on the ipad by the radar screen, seems once I figure it out it should do what I am wanting...thanks for your input, very valuable...Bob
