We're in the VERY early stages of looking for then purchasing a Class A motorhome, probably diesel and somewhere in the 32'-36' size.

I am looking for some RV forums that operate like this one does for boats, i.e., people are respectful, don't put down what type iof boat you have, are generous with their experience and knowledge, etc.

Any RV'ers on here who know of high quality RV forums?

There are some general forums out there. Once you decide on the make look for that brand. Lots on Facebook too. Been looking at a truck camper myself and the lance forum is a great site. Want something iI can pull a boat with, so getting away from the travel trailers and motorhomes now. Seems like everybody and their brother is buying an RV right now.

We have a Grand Design “Solitude”, a 35 foot 5th wheel manufactured by Grand Design. We belong to Mygrandrv.com and I’m registered as Tim340. I haven’t been on the site for awhile, but once the boating season ends I spend more time there. For a few years, my wife and I traveled during the winter and lived in our rv for months at a time. Now that we have grand children, that has changed, but we still have our rv and enjoy the lifestyle when we can.

I worked in the RV industry a few years ago. What I learned was, Ford powered V10s are pretty much bulletproof. They are extremely high on torque and are really getting 10-12 MPG, while diesels are getting 12-14 MPG. So fuel $$$ not a saving with diesels. You are pretty much always less than 50 miles from a Ford dealer, not so much with diesels. As with our boats diesel maintenance is much higher. I would recommend driving both and make your own decision. Goo Luck.

Every now and again, a nugget of gold. Thanks

I looked at IRV2 and decided I liked what I saw so I joined. I'm reasonably sure it's not the only good RV site out there, but it's the first one I found.

Thanks for that tip!

Facebook has several different ones too...

Mark, I used to be on FB but quit years ago. I found it to be a great waste of time and the proverbial straw was when I got a post from my SIL that said "well, it's 10:00 on Tuesday morning and it's time to do the laundry."

I figured I didn't need to spend my time reading posts like that so I quit FB. BTW, did you know it's almost impossible to quit FB. The make it so difficult it took me a few days and many posts to their management to finally cut the cord. That was probably 30 years ago and I still get emails from FB asking if I'm ready to come back.

There is no comparison between a diesel pusher and V10 gas powered Class A. The gas ones are loud, have very little towing capacity and the structure provides for a very rough and unsteady ride. A diesel pusher with air suspension is just the opposite. But while you may get a “nice” Class A for $150k you’re not touching a new DP for less than half that from a quality builder like Newmar or Entegra.

Cincy, apparently you don't know that I proudly hold the title of Resident CSR Cheapskate!

I don't buy depreciating assets new. I worked in the RV sales industry long enough to know how much new 'anything' depreciates in the first 5 years. After that 5 year period they still depreciate but the depreciation curve has diminished.

Toys (boats, cars and trucks, RV's, etc.) lose about half their value in the first 5-7 years. I'll gladly let someone else take that depreciation hit and fix the things that are often broken or inop with new RV's.

Then, like a shining knight on his white steed, I step in and take away the motorhome his wife is getting tired of spending money on, nice guy that I am!

And yes, my search for the perfect Class A is aimed toward a diesel pusher. I'd prefer the engine be a CAT, but I'd look at Cummins also.

Ha! I operate the same way. I’ve been researching DP models for the past couple years. Probably a couple few years away from owning but I suspect at that point it’s going to be a 2-3 year old unit so maybe one that is just now being built. They are selling like hot cakes now so maybe by then there will be an inventory glut of used ones.

I supplied freight liner custom chassis With parts for years. They make a lot of chassis for the big guys.....typically Cummins pusher. They are a first rate company and a superior quality product.... Look for them when shopping around

and if you are down is SC at the factory you can park in the campground get service and tour the plant..well worth your time

On diesel pushers look for "side radiator" cooling. It moves the radiator to the left rear side of the body and away from the rear of the engine. The result is much improved service accessibility. It is fairly common on the higher HP diesel pushers.

I read a comment posted on IRV2 today that mentioned DEF. Does anyone know when that was started in motorhomes? Being the cheapskate that I am :)rolleyes:) that's one expense I'd like to avoid if possible.

It is my understanding it started around 2008 model year for Cat motors.
We just sold the truck and fifth wheel and are also on the hunt for a used diesel pusher. Because of the def issue and our budget we have focused on 2006-2007 Fleetwood Revolution models which have the Cat C9 at 400hp and side radiator.
