Hope all made it through the storm Yesterday… My 25 foot sea ray Sundancer 1998 Canvas did not do so well… The framework which is smaller than today’s size cracked and ripped the Bimini cover and went through my morning Cover ripped to shreds… I have Geico Boat Insurance… Hopefully this is covered? Anybody deal with them before? Tips?

I'm surprised you have GEICO with their pricing.

Let us know how it turns out. An entire new canvas isn't cheap.
The pricing didn’t seem to be too extreme… $420 per year…I use their auto insurance also… Maybe get some kind of discount? I guess I’ll find out soon if it is worth it?

Thankfully I’ve never dealt with issues related to named storms, but I was always under the impression that removing canvas prior to a storm hitting was standard procedure. It’s possible your insurance company may feel the same way? The only way you’re going to find out is to call them - we’re not claims adjusters, all that’s offered here is meaningless opinions.

Somebody has to pay for those little lizard commercials :).... I gave up Calling them years ago as they were double The competition

I had damage to canvas in June from a hail storm, 4 boats on our dock had canvas damaged and no one has had any trouble with insurance. Do you all expect they may not cover the OP because it was a named storm?

I don't think it was a named hurricane storm by the time it hit long island? ill have to check?... I didn't think I was supposed to take the canvas off? as suggested here... If I took the Bimini top and the moring cover off?...would the Insurance company pay for the new engine after it got swapped? if the bilge pump could not keep up?

I was down at my boat through the storm last week. The wind was much stronger than was predicted

Guess again... Don't Want to get into the details... But anyone who has any real damage should submit a claim

I have Geico as well, so far so good, but no need to submit a claim yet. Always cheaper after I try to price out competition. Hope all turned out well...

A tip for all of you who have "bigger" boats. Ask your insurance company if they offer "yacht policies" in addition to "boat policies". The diff in coverage is amazing and for not a huge increase in cost.

I have coverage through Travelers and have a yacht policy. In the time I've had Beachcomber (10 years) they have covered:
-repairs to stamoid bimini on bridge after a wind storm that caught us on the water. About $5k
-repairs needed after a runaway starter on stbd engine. Replaced started, new wiring to both helms, new gauges to both helms, total cost a bit over $15k.
-repairs to a transmission after it blew up and would not come out of forward gear. Repairs about $12k.
-replacement of bridge radar and gps after a lightening strike close to the boat that blew them out. They were both the original equipment (the old green screen radar) and Travelers replaced the radar, antenna and new 11" plotter, all new Raymarine. Cost a bit north of $12k that included two techs coming here from Portland to do the installation. They spent two days doing the work and billed Travelers for their mileage, meals and hotel. No complaint from Travelers.

I think Travelers will be glad when Beachcomber sells.

When I get a bigger boat, I’m going to research this. Lightning, and storm damage, that makes sense, but what portion of the coverage insures the loss from mechanical equipment that goes bad? That seems like the premium would need to be really high to cover those costs, but I’m no insurance guy.

Todd, I'm not sure what portion of the policy covers the other damages but what they look at are damages that are sudden and unexpected and not due to poor maintenance and/or lack of maintenance.

On the repairs that resulted friom the runaway starter the insurance company sent a surveyor to check on the repair work (and the cost) being done by my mechanic. It seemed to be extroardinarly high for the cause of the damage. Once the mechanic showed the surveyor what he was having to do and the parts and labor that was required the surveyor gave the repairs his thumbs up and they covered the costs.
