Hi guys, I have one of those big glass gear lube bottles mounted to the back of the boat (high up behind the engine) that I have noticed is leaking blue gear lube onto the floor. It looks like it is coming from the bottom where the tube connects to the bottle.

Any suggestions as to how I can stop this leak? Is the gear lube flammable?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with the glass bottles - just the plastic ones - so can't offer any help on that - other than to say "look closely at it" and you'll probably figure it out.. Glass sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Gear lube is not flammable - but keep up with cleaning it out of the bilge so you don't pump it out into the water.

I think it's plastic... The guys at the marina said it was glass but that actually makes no sense lol...

OK, so... in 1985 that was not an option from Mercruiser. So the first thing to figure out is if it's the one that Merc currently uses or some other aftermarket setup - since most here on this forum will only be familiar with the standard Merc one. Next, figure out where it's leaking - if it's too full it can sometimes leak out the cap as the fluid gets hot. Other than that (assuming the Merc model), it could be... a cracked bottle... a leak in the epoxy that seals the wires... the fitting itself... a loose hose to fitting connection... even a split/hole in the hose.

If you can't readily tell where it's leaking, get a can of Brakleen (green can) and spray it down. Then monitor closely.

Tighten up the zip tie. Easy fix

Thanks, I will consider all of the above.

Sounds like you have the kit that added a fluid reservoir to a boat that didn’t have one originally. You probably have a braided line that goes from the bottom of the bottle out through the transom and screws into the top plug of the outdrive.
