What a positive COVID-19 test REALLY means

Just walked to the restaurant the marina...

I did not wear a mask. Surprised at the number of people just walking around with masks on. We were all more than 6’ apart.

Why is that astonishing? They are temporarily being inconvenienced in order to stop a pandemic. So they are not concerned about protecting rights, more on protecting people.

But you don't believe that there is a dangerous pandemic so its not a surprise that you don't get it. And there are many more that share your view. So the US will have the longest run of COVID of any developed nation. Its the price of protecting your right to not participate in limiting the spread of a pandemic. But don't blame bad governments or lefties or liberals for your prolonged COVID experience in the US or try to convince yourselves it is not real. Its the choice you are making.

Show me in the US constitution where it states : “In the event of a pandemic or other health emergency as determined by the federal government, this document becomes null and void for the duration of the said emergency” or something similar.

You won’t. And what you aren’t seeing from your lofty perch in another country is how the rights of US citizens are being trashed.

In Nevada, casinos are allowed to operate with crowds, but churches can’t hold services.

In other areas big box stores can have as many people as they want, while the government limits religious freedom.

In NYC, businesses are shuttered while domestic terrorist are told they can continue their protest and not comply with social distancing or mask laws.

And I could go on and on. In order for government (US) to restrict freedoms under the constitution those restrictions must be narrow and apply across the board, not selectively.

Your disdain for the US is noted as well.

This is the idiocy on full display. The virus can only survive less than a minute in the sunshine and heat. Plus, being outside is the perfect disinfectant.

But let’s keep relying on bureaucrats and politicians to make health decisions. o_O

I LOVE the US. I have huge respect for your constitution. I hate some people’s selfish attitudes that leverage the constitution of your great country for stupid purposes. The founding fathers would be shocked that what they fought so hard to write was being spun like you are. It is to protect the people. I totally understand 2nd amendment concerns. But using the constitution as an argument as you and a couple others have is ridiculous. Covid is the enemy. Get rid of it as fast as you can.

You may also want to note the "temporary" suspension of our liberties after 9/11 with things like the Patriot Act that still haunt us to this day.

You’re clueless as to the founding fathers and the constitution. The truth is if the founding fathers saw how the US government was trampling rights they would be aghast.

Covid is a problem, but again, it’s not a problem that requires suspension of rights.

Exactly. It’s the slow chipping away that’s alarming.

Benjamin Franklin has a quote about safety and security......

If you truly understood our Constitution and what it took to get there you would be appalled at the lawless actions taken by some of our governors. The Constitution is not to protect "the people." It is exactly the opposite -- it is to protect the individual from "the people." They don't teach it in schools anymore.

The numbers have changed some since this was created...
What a benign chart of useless information.... Technology advancements in the form of medicine, modern communications, materials, and public knowledge are hardly factored in to "level load". These are simple numbers that only the media would expound to a selfish purpose. Wouldn't you agree the Bubonic Plague today would be entirely different as to death impact? AIDS HIV should not be in the data as it's communicable by choice and lifestyle.

Good point. The fatality rate based on the current numbers is 4.1% (137K/3.3M). If all infections magically stopped today, the rate would go up as deaths from the previously infected occur, so the rate is a little low.
The only way to achieve an ultimate fatality rate in the 1% or lower range is to assume there are large numbers of uncounted cases. So, if actual cases are 10X the current number of cases counted, then the fatality rate would be .041%. That would equate to 1.37 million deaths if applied to the total population.
Another way to look at it is, if Capt Ronn's scenario of a .01% fatality rate is accurate, then 137 million Americans have been infected, which seems high. I wish that were true as it would put us pretty close to herd immunity.

I’m beginning to believe you’re trolling. Your data is so bad, your reference articles are not a science, I think you’re just trolling.
Bubye.

Real data to think about doesn’t fit with the narrative you have been told?

My point before was that making a virus pandemic the poster child for defending other rights and freedoms you feel are being slowly eroded is ridiculous. COVID kills people and actually does need to be stopped. The vast majority of the rest of the World (the Brazilian president excepted) realizes that and is winning the battle. Fight the virus with all the tools you have, and deal with the other issues separately. Sorry to tell you, but asking people to wear a mask to sow the spread of COVID is not oppression of the people by the state. And don’t talk to me about is been creeping for years. That is irrelevant to fighting COVID. Your politicians are spinning this into a constitutional attack and you are drinking the cool aid.

I guess that is why Florida has no COVID at all, being the sunshine state and all.

"Winning" the battle at what expense? Lots of places are being economically devastated. They be here soon for the US to bail them out. And there is a huge difference between asking people to wear a mask and mandating a mask subject to arrest and fines. There are lots of activities that kill people. That doesn't mean our rights aren't important. Like I said, you don't understand our Constitution -- there is a reason it's the only one like it in the world.

Borrowing from a few posts in this thread:
"If you’d do some reading you’d know the answers to your ignorance."
"Sorry if facts trigger you."
"Don't let facts get in the way."
"Real data to think about doesn’t fit with the narrative you have been told?"

I suppose being called a troll by you is a great compliment. Thank you.

On the flip side of these arguments...My slipmate is a physician. He has a friend in Tx who is an epidemiologist/MD. He said hospitals are now lowballing reporting numbers to avoid being shutdown again and stopping elective surgeries. Conditions are WORSE in Texas than are being reported. They are avoiding testing if possible. It's all about $$$

I find that hard to believe. TX has banned elective surgeries in many counties. They shouldn't be doing truly elective surgeries right now anyway.
