Any motorhome owners on here?

See, I'm such a newbie at pads that I can't even answer your questions Mike. I don't think connecting through my cell carrier (Verizon) would be a good way to go because wouldn't that really rack up the minutes?
I purchased a new phone from Verizon about 2 years ago and they had a special at the time to get a tablet for free. It shares the same data plan as my phone. My plan has 4 devices (my phone +tablet, wife's phone +tablet) and we're on the 8GB plan. We rarely used all 8GB, and they roll data over if you don't use it. It may be worth a call to Verizon to see if there's something they can do for you. The tablets we got are I think 8", so right inline with what you are after. If I recall they did have larger ones too.

Thanks Kevin. We haven't even sold the boat yet so it's a bit premature to be looking for a pad that we will use in a motorhome we don't even own yet.

I definitely will keep that in mind though because the Verizon booth at Costco is where I've done my business for at least 15 years.

I don’t anyone who’s not in the IT world who doesn’t use an iPad sorry but Apple has the tablet locked up they are so user friendly I could never use an Android I don’t even know anyone who doesn’t own an IPHONE for that matter.

^^ very true. There’s no touch screen quite as good as an Apple and the iOS operating system for Apple’s mobile devices is far superior to anything else. And yes ..I’ve owned both and have always come back to Apple. It’s effortless.

Take it for what it’s worth though. Everyone will have their thoughts on this and this is largely based on personal preference. This is mine based on my experience. If someone prefers Android devices, by all means.

I've been looking into getting into this realm...Poss. with an Expedition style vehicle... I'd like to get a MAN 6x6, but it's a challenge in the US.

That said, having traveled across country for extended trip three separate times, I agree with the tablet idea....I used mine on the dash and the large screen was a great advantage. Further, having quick access to the internet for other issues is helpful as well...(Finding grocery stores for example)...I still use this setup when I travel...

I don't want to get into the android vs Ipad debate, but I will say I have an Ipad Pro 256GB 12".... It might seem like overkill but it's an advantage that I'll take.

Keep in mind the same concerns you have when using it on a vessel. Keep it out of direct sunlight or make sure the A/C is cooling it. Also, try and keep it charging as using the nav apps do use a fair amount of power....

I want to emphasize one issue, I can't stress enough...If you choose this route, make sure you get a model with cellular service. It has GPS built-in and the internet connection will be invaluable...You don't need to activate the service unless you are traveling and want it, but the device needs to be capable...

Now, a "pro-tip" is to get a service provider that is different than your phone service provider. Why? Because you'll have redundancy if you happen to be in an area that is stronger for one than the other. Make sense? There have been times when I've lost connect to one device and I've been able to "tether" the devices so they share a single connection...Same redundancy we think about in boating..

I hesitate to do this....

Unless you desire to live in the Apple/IOS environment, I think Android phones/tablets offer a very competitive product and because there are multiple companies producing tablets & phones prices can be competitive.

There is nothing one tablet does significantly better or worse than the other. The user experience is very similar. My .02 is to save some $$ and buy the android tablet.

Let the flames begin...

As some of you know we're about to make the transition from a boat to a motorhome.

when you launch your motorhome at the boat ramp into water , how much time do you suspect it to swim , so how much time will you have with it on the water ;-) ?

i think you will return to boating after a break !

Now THAT is funny! Unless it's my motorhome that's trying to swim.

I went with an iPad to keep thing simple because I have an Apple iPhone and I included a data plan for it.
I’ve found that it has become a replacement for my laptop about 98% of the time. It’s with me on the boat all the time for internet access and music streaming.
If you have an Android phone, I’m sure you can do the same with an Android tablet.
Having one type of phone and a different type of tablet would be a PIA for me.
However, if you really don’t need or want a tablet, there is no more need for GPS units in most newer vehicles.
Your smart phone can be a replacement and projected on a big screen in the dashboard pretty easily.
Our 2018 leased Chevy SUV’s have built in 8” color touchscreen systems that include stereo, backup cameras, hands free calling, and Apple car play among other things.
Most newer vehicles include something similar.
Connecting my iPhone to the system in the car and using Apple Car Play gives me access to Waze and Google Maps on the touchscreen in the dash. Both work flawlessly.
If the RV you buy is older and doesn’t already have a large touchscreen system in versions that will feature either Apple Car Play or a similar Android system, they can be had for relatively little dollars and are easy to install.
You’re probably going to want a backup camera and hands free calling in your RV anyway.

0JVM, you nailed it with your comments. I'm thinking of a 10" tablet so I can easily see it from the driver's seat. I'd like it to be able to display a backup camera and GPS mapping (Garmin). A plus would be hands free calling. Playing music wouldn't be a big deal as most Class A's have a decent stereo system.

Thanks all for the good advice and info.

It may have been covered, if you go with a tablet, make sure it has GPS built in. Some do not. You will be out of cell phone range in parts of the country especially mountain and desert areas.

Figured out your Rv / boat problem

We bought a 30' Grand Design travel trailer last year leaving Monday on a 6 week trip. In the tapatalk app they have a great forum that covers North America. There is no bashing of product and many sections that are not specific to their product. Some of the sections are RV tips, trips, routes, parks to stay and avoid and just about every state is covered in some way. I joined it 6 months before I bought our RV.

With an Android tablet, you do not need a cell contract for the GPS to work... don't know if this is possible with rotten apple. I bought a cheap 7" droid tablet and a Ram mount and it works great for trail maps in my RZR!

Here's our snow coach. 2004 Monaco Monarch SE DBD, 8.1 w/Allison transmission, 5500 Onan, 2 slides, 1.5 bathrooms, leveling jacks, 2 a/c units, 4 door fridge/freezer w/icemaker, convection micro, 3 burner propane stove, propane furnace, Direct TV, 2 flat screens 32"& 20". It's our 3rd motorhome and they all have been bought used and paid for in cash. RV's like boats are very easy to get upside down real quick.

Jim, do you know if that same tablet is available for street maps ? I like the idea of a cheap (emphasis on "cheap") droid tablet. Your tablet sounds just like what I'm looking for. What make/model do you have?

Mark, nice photo. Is that up on Snoqualmie Pass? You are using your RV's like we intend to--all seasons, all kinds of highways, all kinds if sights to see and enjoy.

An Android tablet will run several map apps including Google Streets and Waze.

I ordered this one:
