Howdy all. My 02' Sundancer 260 is starting to get some rust spots on the swim deck. I figured the swim deck was made of fiberglass, so i'm not sure how there are rust spots. Has anyone seen this and know how to best get rid of them/prevent them from spreading?

Thanks

Most likely what has happened is a piece of metal dust or debris has landed there and cause the rust stain.

Try some compound and elbow grease.

Yup - nothing from the swim platform would cause that. It came from somewhere else. Somebody nearby doing some grinding... a nearby factory... etc. See if you can pick the piece off with your fingernail, then use the Iron Out (or similar). If they're small enough, they won't take long to disappear on their own, either (and then still use the IO).

Try some "barkeepers friend" too. Use the liquid one. Done forget to wax after.

As to the source, maybe steel something flaked off from and rusted in place.

Thanks all, much appreciated. For the Iron Out, i see there are powders and liquids. Any clue as to which works better/easier/etc?

They both work just as well as each other. You would mix the powder with water, anyways.

that comes from spay on sun screen.... found that out the hard way, the aerosol contains metal flakes. FSR or Rust Off takes it off. Had the wifey remove all the aerosol sunscreen and never a problem again.

Sunscreen is A common cause as mentioned. Are the railroad tracks nearby, rail dust is a big contributor on boats and especially cars.

I always keep some Rust Off from Goof Off in my cleaning caddy.

It takes the rusty water line off my barge with just a spray and it gos away.

Thanks everyone. I will give this a shot. Makes sense about sunscreen use or even the railroad, as there is a railroad about 200 yards from the boathouse.

shopping

I had a rust stain on my cabin carpet caused by the a table base. I used Whink per the directions and the stain instantly disappeared with no ill effects to the carpet. Pretty cheap at most hardware stores.
