So all the advice I have ever received here says to get more amp than speaker because you will have bigger better sound when you have extra headroom in the amp. When I read educational posts on Crutchfield in the like they always say they should be matched. Why does their advice differ? liability for them as someone overcranks and blows a speaker?

Although there is nothing wrong with, for example, matching a 50W rms speaker to a 50W rms amp. In this pairing though, there is nothing left past the amp's 50W rms potential output.

Lets say you have a speaker with 50W rms and an amp with a potential of 100W rms. In this scenario, you can get the speaker its 50W rms, same as above, but the amp's gain level is much lower. This means the amp makes its rated (or dialed RMS) at a lower volume level on the stereo volume dial.

Bottom line, we can always hold back an amp's wattage, but we can never make it produce more then its rated output. When we dont need all the amp's potential in order to drive a speaker to its potential, this is called headroom. Think of a V8 Benz on the Autobahn compared to a little 4 banger Opal, both trying to run the same speed. The Opal will be matted and the Benz will with cruising comfortably at part throttle.
