420AC Thread

We went out on the 1996 420 AC that we are looking to buy in the next week or so. The current owner runs the twin 7.4 Mercs at 2500 rpm. The ride at that speed is less than great. I would most likely run at 3000 which on that boat you are doing about 15 MPH. At that speed it doesn"t seem to wallow so much when dealing with any wave action. What speed do you guys generally run at. Yes it will drink gas pretty well but I dont usually go that far

That is the wrong engine speed to cruise at. Those motors should be run 32-3400 rpm for high speed cruise (on plane) or 10-1200 for a low speed cruise (off plane). At 2500 the boat is probably plowing through the water not quite on plane, pushing a lot of water and burning a lot of fuel. At full throttle the engines should be turning 42-4600 rpm, if not you may need to have the props checked and possibly tweek the pitch. You should run either on plane or fully off plane for the best efficiency.

SR spec sheet has 3500 rpm cruise at 22 mph...getting .5nmpg

The 1996 420 AC I am looking to buy has a refrigerator on one side of the galley and a freezer of equal size on the opposite side of the galley. Do they run on both 12 And 110 volt or just 110?
Mine refrig and freezer are 110V only

I installed in a 24V inverter from bow thruster batteries with autoswitch to run the 110V system. Disconnect everything except the refrigerator...and small 110v loads.

Great info. Rhanks

Assuming I buy this boat, I will need to do something like that or just install a new frige that is dual voltage like the boat I just sold. I had put in a Vitrifrigo and it was fantastic. Switched automatically from 110 to 12v but defaulted to 110 so if shore power or generator were on it went to that power source. It used very little battery as well.

If either the frig or freezer go I will follow your lead on the Vitrifrigo for sure. Hope you enjoy your potential purchase as much as we have.

Planning to take my 420 AC to Block Island.....180 mile crossing from Little Egg Inlet. Should make it fuel wise but wondering how accurate the fuel gages are? My 400 showed empty with 1/3 full. Is this the case with the 420AC?
I replaced on of my senders with a new ultrasonic and it tracked true to use.

Here is my offering to your question and this is based on my boat with Cats and three years older. I do not trust my fuel gauges at all. There is a fuel burn chart on this thread somewhere I remember reading that provides great info that I use as a guide. You could also Google it. 180 miles is more than I would go. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Just a suggestion......if you go up to NYC and then run Long Island Sound to BI, it only adds about 50 miles to the trip. The trip of the East River is magnificent. Liberty Landing is a convenient place to refuel. You will get your Ocean time and there are many places to duck in along the way. Sounds like a fun trip. Good luck.

Went to Shinnecock Inlet instead to fuel up....was at 1/4 tank so gages are pretty accurate. Did have enough to make it to BI. Ended up at BI with a blown transmission....stayed a few days and limped home via the LI Sound. Running 9 mph so trip took 2 1/2 days to get back. Pulled trans on Tuesday and had it back in (discs were bad...assumed the PO ran aground) by Friday. Trans was rebuilt by twin disc factory service center.

@EKM Sorry about your transmissions troubles. V Drive? Curious if you had any indication prior to event. It sounds as if they were able to pull transmission without pulling engine?

The boat has straight drive....look for my post on "how to remove transmission from an aft cabin boat" in the diesel section which has a write up. Clutches started slipping a few hours before it lost forward.

I'm looking to replace the carpets in the salon and bedrooms. Can anyone provide recommendations?

I'll be watching any replies. Have you tried a local carpet shop? In my area that seems the only way to go. Keep us posted on your progress please.

Hi, Also a new member with a 1996. I have recently arranged to replace all carpet in the main salon for $1330CAD materials and labour. I split the large piece in the salon into 2 pieces to allow access to the engine hatch only. Material being used is Dream Weaver Epic.

Please post some pics when done.
Thanks!

So you carpet will be removable like OEM. I pull back the carpet to gain access to the hatches. I have a hatch for the Gen, hatch for the AC, three hatches for engines and hatch under the table to slide into the battery compartment in front of the port engine. I could not imagine what it would look like with a veneer wood type product unless you have a few carpets to cover. I'm with you to make a section for the main engine hatch removable and cover with acarpet runner or such.

Hi, I just redid the all the carpet in my entire 1997 sea ray 420 AC. I have a lot of info for you if your interested. First, I would not recommend using carpet, we used vynle woven flooring indoor and outdoor. I have lots of before and after pictures. We just bought our boat a few months ago, the previous owner let their dogs pee in the boat for a few years then passed away; it was a mess. Anyways, are you using carpet? The salon is super easy compared to the bedrooms.
