Today I am at the boat and on the next finger (connected) and directly up wind of me I saw a local marina rat working on a customer’s boat. I wandered over to see what work was being done and found the guy in the bilge if a Maxum 3500
Express cruiser trouble shooting a suspected vacuum leak at the carb. The guy is spraying starter fluid at various joints and fittings with the engine running, no blowers going. He has a lit cigarette in his mouth and then grabs the cig in two fingers while with the same hand, spraying the Starting fluid. I watch him for about five minutes as ash is dropping down on the top of the engine. I thought about saying something but figured I’d let Darwin take care of it and just shook my head and backed away. Had I mentioned how dangerous it is to smoke and work around gasoline and ether he would have just given me some bit about how he does this all the time and never blew up.
