40 sedan bridge forum

Swim platform question. Has anyone lifted their swim platform? Or, replaced the OEM one with one that rides higher and is wider? I thought someone had done this, but I looked back through the forum didn't quickly see any discussion on it. I did see questions about ow much weight the platform can hold and if anyone had replaced it with a hydraulic one. But no discussion about what it would take (and what it would cost) to put a higher, wider platform on.

Anyone have experience with this?
Scooper, I would like to do the same. I am having trouble with the dingy moving every time I back down, and that is doing it very slow. I'm not sure of the access behind the water tank for through bolting. I looked at a couple of web sites for platforms and did not find anything for our boat. I am in Hopkins Creek, so if we could find a glass guy to do a mold it may make it cheaper. Let me know what you find. Greg

My personal take on hydraulic platforms.

No way in hell would I add one to my boat. You're adding more maintenance and more points of failure. Couple in the person(s) installing and getting the installation correct without causing structural problems down the road.

I don't believe the 400SB was designed with a hydraulic platform in mind as an add on. Remember, all that hardware needs attach points.

I've walked away from boats with aftermarket hydraulic swim platforms, mainly because of poor installations.

YMMV

Thanks. But I am not asking about a hydraulic platform. I am talking about a new platform that is higher and perhaps wider to allow easier getting on and off the boat, and perhaps more utility when on the anchor or at raft ups.

Slightly longer would be nice also to truly hold a dinghy or to sit on.

Let me be clear, because

OK, sorry, I thought we were talking hydraulics.

Do you guys know where I can find one of these? It’s the hatch latch going to the bridge.

I just hooked up the NEMA 0183 line out of my new chartplotter to the interface shown and it does full trip point by point diving and headings ETC... when I go off coarse, and click it to goback to route it tracks back just fine. I like it and don't feel a need to update the autopilot...

I am attempting to connect my SPX10 course computer to a Garmin 1040xs. I have tried the NMEA configuration you photographed (thank you!), but am getting a "No Data" message when I try to follow a route. Did you have to make any adjustments to the NMEA communication settings in the Garmin?

I checked Flounder Pounder and didn't see it. Might want to call them and ask. It almost looks custom made by the Sea Ray factory. Looks easy enough to make yourself out of a scrap piece of starboard.

Forgive me for I am new to diesels- I am trying to do the oil change. Do I fill the new oil in the areas that I circled? I do my car oil changes often, but I wanted to ask the experts as this is my first oil change on the new boat. Thanks for the help in advance.

My 3116s are like that. That’s where the pill goes.

Mine has an aftermarket, larger swim platform bolted on top of the original. It seems to handle weight well as it holds a 10’ centre console dinghy on a 3 point davit system. It also rides well with very little wash going over it while under way. I’ll get some pictures the next time I’m at the boat this week and will post them as I see there are a few of you interested. You can see a profile shot of it on the attached pic

Thats interesting. I do want to see more pics, thanks. I’m going to go compare that pic to mine and see how much higher and wider it is. Any idea who made that or what it cost?

Not sure about make or cost. I’ll see if there is a manufacturer name on it and will get proper dimensions as well.

Has anyone come up with a solution for the slapping noise cause by the chines under the bow? Just spent a sleepless night at anchor with current and wind causing chop to hit the bow. I have thought about stringing a couple pool noodles across the front of the boat with rope in them and securing to mid cleats.

It's the hull design of the boat. Mine does it in the slip with the wind coming in the right direction. I just ignore it.

I had one of those earlier this season. I think you need to be strategic with your choice of slip and point the bow downwind. Sorry, I know that doesn’t help.

We get various winds. If from the south, no noise since it's hitting the stern. But a northerly wind (usually in winter) gets the bow slap. Also while anchored since the bow remains in the wind I hear the chine slap.

I've just got use to it and ignore it now.

We took a three day trip this weekend, close to 300 miles. On the way back, about an hour from home port I hit a log floating vertically in the water. The top was floating flush with the surface of the water so there was no clue until the port propeller struck it. We all looked at our wake to see what we hit and saw the telephone size log popping up and down in the wake. Everything was Ok and we all were paying particular attention to vibrations, rpms and other signals that might tell us we had an issue from the strike. Everything was fine until about 10 or 15 minutes later when there was a loud noise and then no power from the port side. We tested the starboard power and no problem there, we tested port and engine revved up but the propeller shaft did not turn so we are pretty sure the transmission or clutch has been damaged. I did look at the output shaft of the trans. to insure that we hadn't sheared a key at the hub and neither side is turning so back to the trans.

Anybody got any thoughts on this one, I think I need a new trans. but I am hoping maybe there is a shear pin somebody can direct me to to save the trans.??????????

Yup. I sleep on the salon sofa in those situations. My wife sleeps through it in the master stateroom with earplugs in. I can't do that because the fact I have earplugs in keeps me awake by itself.

So the coupler/shaft doesn't turn at all when in forward or reverse? Is that what correct? What did you find under the boat?
