OFFICIAL 390/40 Motor Yacht Thread

What color is the water if any? If it's reddish, the water is coming from a void and leaking out into the bilge. Then the question is how is it getting into the void? Are you in fresh or salt water? If salt, the first step would be to try to figure out if the leakage is salt. I just taste it and that seems gross these days, but I don't know any other way to test except some kind of analysis. Anyway, the most likely fresh sources are the numerous potable water system connections in the space, including the manifold, the water heater and the washer if you have one. My source was a loose fitting on the water heater. Fresh could also be rainwater; a gap in the caulking between the hull and the deck joint would not be unusual in boats of our age. Sorry to not be more definitive but leaks can be very frustrating and hard to find. There are stories of owners chasing them for years.

For what it’s worth:
When I had the survey done on my 2005 390 MY CT6A 8.3 we noticed a 4” removable inspection cap just aft of the isolation transformer, same place as described in the forum. The Survayor and seller had no idea what or why it was there. It had a faint smell of diesel fuel. Anyway, I pumped about 5 gal of water out of it. 2 years later there occasionally is a small accumulation of water.

I was able to get in touch with the guy who sold the boat to the guy I bought it from, he solved the problem. At that time the boat was berthed in Long Island,NY It was in a position where it got a lot of wind and salt spray. One day when the owner showed up, there was 50 gal of diesel fuel in the port engine bilge, the port fuel tank had ruptured due to corrosion. The fuel was pumped out and the investigation started. Turned out that a certain number of the 390s did not have the engine vents properly sealed when the boat was constructed. It took some back and forth, but Sea Ray did show up and remove a large section of the hull and resealed the vent housing. The entire helm came out to get the new fuel tanks installed. Total bill was 42K. Anyway, once the boat was put back together, there was still a strong smell of diesel that no one could figure out. The owner was taking the boat to FL via the ICW. Stopping for the night at Coinjock marina, he noticed 3 other 390s. Odd to see that, so he inquired mentioning the smell of diesel to the mechanic. The mechanic said that was the reason the 3 other 390s were there and if the owner allowed him to cut a hole, he would show him where the smell was coming from. That is how the inspection hole with the removable cap came to be. Somehow fuel migrated from the port engine bilge forward to that void. I haven’t figured out how, but at least I know why. How water gets from aft to forward, I’m not sure, but I’m still looking. The amount is minimal thus it’s not high on my list. Hope this helps........

I thought I might get closer to 20mph at 3500 rpm. And with less mass, and a better sea state I might. I can see that the 390MY with gas engines is very weight sensitive. I had planned to travel with full water from home port. Now I will change that and travel with closer to 1/4 tank and fill accordingly when I stop. We will also make sure that black water tank is empty during travel as well.
I just went out yesterday for a little cruise - from PWM I went past the power lines to about halfway to Tims / Ricks. Turned around and came back.

With a full water tank, empty holding tank, and 8mph wind I could cruise at 10mph at a 10gph burn - a little slow but saves on the gas. I hit about 23mph at a 45(ish)gph burn at 3800 rpm.

That is great info. Your 10mph cruise; was that 10 gph burn per engine or was it 5 gph per engine? We seem pretty steady on 2 gallons per mile (that is one gallon per engine per mile).

I would like to keep swapping data with you. My numbers do not suggest that we can get to 23mph at 3800 rpm. But we will take a look next time I am out.

So, 10.6gph (total, 5.3 per motor) and I was going 8.2knots (9.6mph) - as long as the computer is doing the right numbers :)

I'm at G13 - I am there most days. If my door is open feel free to say hi! I usually leave the glass down to try and keep some bugs out

Like you 23mph at 3800rpm I can’t do it.

Next time I take it out I will take copious notes and provide my results. That was all from memory - I remember the 10mph part because I was at it so long.
My bottom needs cleaned , but I generally run 2100-2200 rpm. Gets me about 8 to 9 knots depending on conditions. We are on the Ohio River so I
rarely run much faster due to the wake these boats throw. When I do have a clear shot it’s not for long.

I don’t know what a rail is sir. Please explain.
My apologies! I'm not sure of what the technical name is. The hand rail that goes around the top of the boat (specifically the hand rail). The chrome / metal bar that circumvents the boat from the starboard side door around the bow and back to the port side door.

I'm trying to buy some fender hangers that grip on to it:

Can’t remember. However wrap something around it and mark it. Then measure.
Here is what I use, very easy to adj

Anyone know of any 390 MY for sale on east coast from VA north ? Diesels

I know of a 420 aft cabin. Very similar boat. It’s on the Chesapeake

Thanks but big difference imho. Both nice boats but looking for a 390 with diesels.

Finally got the big parts put back together, should be able to start it this coming week. Crona19 Has slowed the process. Changing the head on the other side ASAP.

Last question to bug ya'll with for a bit, I promise!

Anyone in the Northern Va / DC / MD area replaced their isinglass? I'm looking to replace all of it to include the canvas. Going to put in the mesh "U" if possible as well. I just got a quote from Renegade (local Prince William Marina repair shop) and it was $5k. Seems high. Anyone else done this?
