2006 340DA 8.1 V-Drives. Pressed start button (port engine) and starter motor spins but the bendix gear does not engage. I can see and it looks like I can get to this without a tremendous amount of effort..but experience has shown things are not as always as easy as they look.
Looks like the correct Part Number is 50-808011A05, and only a couple of bolts holding this in.
Anyone here replaced this before? Any "gotcha's" I should look out for? I do remember in the old auto days, you could whack the starter housing with a hammer and it would sometimes work..Any other ideas or suggestions?

I've swapped the starter motors before on my 8.1's trying to eliminate an electrical glitch. This is very easy since they are at the top of the motors. Two bolts and electrical and its done. I'd remove it and take it to an electrical repair shop for repair!

Back in the boat this afternoon..pulled the starter. Bendix gear looks ok, and cleaned the electrical connectors, thinking just "maybe", but no soap...put it back together and it spins but Bendix does not engage...

It’s the solenoid on the starter. You may be able to have it replaced separately. Or rebuilt?

I think I'll just order a new starter on Tuesday, then see if the old one can be rebuilt and keep it as a spare...

Check out DB electrical. I have purchased starters and alternators from them in the past and they have good prices. For the price of OEM you could probably pickup three from them. Find them online or on ebay. Oh and they are Marine starters.

Just an update. I ordered the part on 05/26, it shipped the same day. Received on 05/28, and I installed on 05/29. Ordered through Mercruiserparts.com. Really liked the ability to enter the engine Serial Number to get the correct part numbers listed...
