I tried searching and I couldn’t find the topics so if this is a dead horse I’m sorry.

We just picked up some kayaks and plan to let the kids paddle around some of the coves we normally anchor at while me and the wife hang out on the boat until it’s our turn. Where do you put your kayak when you are under way? Has anyone made their own mounts? I know there are a few options we can purchase such as the Magma mounts but they are $240 a piece. I know you have to pay to play with boats but was trying to save some pennies so we can add a paddle board to the collection this summer. Any pics would be great, advise on products is appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

The magma ones are worth the cost!
I played the game for two years just tying them down here and there and it’s a major pain in the butt. with the magma racks they are out of the way and your deck, bow, cockpit, swim platform are safe to move around.

Yes plus 1 on the magmas. When we purchased ours, we also were a little shocked at the cost. But after 3 seasons they are a quality product worth every penny IMO.

leave it on the bow

Left ours on the bow, flat and tied to the rail. It’s a youth-sized sit on top type kayak. Worked well.

More recently I’ve been able to carry on top.

Thank you for the replies. I thought about putting some of these foam blocks down first and then storing them on the bow while underway but I am not sure what those will do to the gelcoat. I will probably just suck up the expense and get the racks so I can have the visibility in front of me instead of trying to look around the yaks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but plastic kayaks shouldn't mar up the gel coat. Unless you want the foam pads for reducing sound?

My friends also put their kayaks on the bow. I need a bigger bow:(

I just bought the Magma mounts, the second one came yesterday, so I haven't put them on the boat yet.
I bought the 14" ones, the last one was $214.00 at Amazon, but now I see they've gone up to $229.99.
Having them on the bow was a pain for me, you have to tie them down pretty good or air catches them.

i was just thinking about using the foam for a protection barrier, wasnt sure how bad the yaks would rub against the boat, this year the lake has been crazy since there is little to nothing else for people to do so the chop is worse than normal. I dont worry about the noise so much, we have three kids so it's never quiet.

They are fiberglass 18 feet long stick out 2 feet in front of boat. I put them on cheap car top supports. The V blocks on the side rail to right of person fishing (We use it to side the kayaks on and off the boat) are the same ones used at the front and aft are hard rubber "Y" blocks used at the front of a boat trailer to rest the bow so it does not bang on the frame. Tie downs are 1" wide web roof rack tie down straps. Had them on the boat since 2005 and been in water that has hit the front bottom of the kayaks. I used 1" by 1" Hallow square tubing aluminum at the aft and 1" by 2" Hallow square tubing at the front to support the V blocks. The whole system is held to the railing with stainless steel rad hose clamps. In all it cost around $50 in 2005.

I got a set of these for my hardtop from Amazon. They work great. On mine the bottom is soft and slightly sticky so they don’t slide. You will need to strap the blocks to the kayak, then strap the ‘yak to the boat.

For plastic ‘yaks on the bow I’m not sure I’d bother as long as you can make them secure and not move around.
